But I'm sure Faith is much more acclimated to rain and fog than I! Well, at least fog... we get plenty of rain in Louisiana...
Fog is only really in winter, but yes, I am certainly used to much lower temperatures than I experienced last week. But I am not complaining - it was nice to have prolonged sunshine and the conditions at night were very comfortable and the observing excellent. I would gladly put up with temps in excess of 100 F every day if we could have good observing conditions instead of the rubbish observing-once-a-week-if-we're-lucky maritime conditions we have in the UK.
I was getting used to the high temperatures by the end of the week and since I have been home, I have actually been COLD! I was the only one wearing a sweater at work today and it is 75F! It won't last though.

Dr. Benway, I bought one of the couch potato systems a few years ago after using David Levy's when he brought it to TSP. It may look like a torture device but once you get sit down it is very comfortabele and a very pleasant observing experience. I am still not home (we stayed an extra 3 days at the state park than we intended, having such a good time) and don't know if it will handle the heavy 20x80's I bought. It handles my 11x80's but time will tell. I was like you, I did not want the bother of building it, but now may make a beefed-up model for the binos!
Faith, I liked your TSP summary on your website! I will be perusing images from all the links on this thread now I have found the Lodge in the State Park has wifi in the lobby!
I kept busy last week, giving a star party to a small group of undergraduate students at McDonalds at the request of one of the staff members then did a "Beginning Stargazing" talk here for an evening program in the park.
Weather cooled off a bit for a few days but the last couple have been hot again. Doing lots of wildlife watching in the park. We start home in 2 days, will probably break the drive down into 2 days depending on wind.
Thanks again to all for a great TSP!
Clear skies and clean glass, Mike

And I think the imaging contest should have an entry for only images made during the week of that TSP? Having images entered that were done elsewhere and processed before hand just doesn't seem as exciting as those taken during the week and under the same conditions for all of us.
DeanS... there is a category I believe. Wes Whiddon of 'The Bendonites' won that category with his shot of the milky way using a D300

Hey Faith, Just curious... did Todd Hargis make the laser TSP 2008 picture for you that on your site?

No, it's all my own work (well, apart from the fact that Robert Reeves pressed the shutter for me, that is). I made it with a 30 second exposure and my red LED flashlight. It took four attempts to get right, though.

After all those clear nights, I'm just now recovering from extreme sleep deprivation. I've started processing my data and maybe with some encouragement, I'll post an image or two.

I have been in New Mexico since Sunday with my 9 year old grandson. We had planned on camping near Ruidoso but all the national forests in the state are closed due to extreme fire hazard. We set up camp at Valley of Fires State Park near Carrizozo on the lava flow. Full moon wrecked my plans for observing but it would be an excellent site at 5800 ft or so. The BLM host told me they have a couple of star parties there each year. We arrived in Santa Fe yesterday afternoon and will be staying here through Sunday. I met some astronomers in Abilene and 5 of us will be hooking up at Tuscola on July 5th for faint fuzzy time. Can't wait!

OK, you asked for it. Here's a quick & dirty process of my M101, the first to go up. You'll find it at

Thanks for the encouragement. If I can ever lay hands on my daughter's Mac, which has a nice copy of photoshop, I may be able to clean it up some more.

Hey All,
I finally got most of my images processed and posted on my website, still have a couple that need lots of help.
They are in my website under the Star Party section.
Comments welcome, Dean
Ted, you are off to a good start, this hobby takes a long time to figure out so be patient with it.
