Actually, they're supposed to be pretty good, if you roast them with dill...

Do you put em in a bun with mustard and relish like any other dog?

Ah yes... another enjoyable time at the AAMM. It is always nice to get together with new friends and old for a night of observing.

The weather cooperated and we had a fine night. Ray had graded the last several miles of the road just a couple of days ago, so the drive was quite smooth, albeit dusty. The field was certainly 'greener' than usual.

This was the first Marathon with the 18", and it was challenging at times in Leo and Virgo due to the abundance of galaxies. I was prepared, however, with lots of books and charts for positive identification.

During the lull after midnight I visited with others and got in some other observing. Got a chance to look at (and through) Jack's new 20"... very nice indeed.

All told I observed 124 objects (109 Messiers, 6 open clusters, 6 galaxies, 1 globular cluster and 2 planetary nebulae).

Had a great time... slept all day Sunday.

Already looking forward to the Grand Canyon Star Party in June!

Good to see you there Peter. I always enjoy the comedy routine SAC puts on when AJ gives his pre-marathon speech It's great to be around so many friendly people. Jack Jones is a hoot. He came by at around 2:00 AM to remind us to look at Omega Centauri, and we shared a light-hearted discussion about the gopher holes

Yes, the road was wonderful. After the driving description on the SAC website, I was prepared for significantly worse but it was a piece of cake- many thanks go to Ray for his work and generosity!

Of course the last time I went off road was in an SUV in rural Mexico where a road is a 2-meter wide opening in the underbrush.

Hello Tom,

If you don't mind me asking, what books are on your observing table. My observing table always has U2000,
a planisphere and NSOG. I need a bigger table

Roger

I can't believe the un obstructed horizon you have there.
I am used to never seeing anything to my south lower than 30 degrees south dec.

I had O'Meara's book, the HB atlas, and a binder full of telrad finder charts showing the locations of Messier objects. (These came from an online source Messier Telrad Charts by John Small .)

I used those charts to zero in on things, after the HB put me in the right area, and used the illustrations in O'Meara to verify what I'd seen. Between them there was very little confusion in finding things. Only my energy level slowed me down - and I'm still flat out amazed, when I look over my notes from that night, that I was still finding things at 4:15am!

Speaking of notes, when I wrote the experience up in my log I discovered I'd record 84 objects, not 78! I hope I simply miscounted the checkmarks on the form as I walked across the field to turn it in that morning. Otherwise I shorted myself!

Did you check out the Star Party Guide article in the Article Discussions forum? And yet another book has been added to my collection
