Tom L,
How does your 12.5" do in those light polluted skies?
The reason I ask is I'm thinking of picking up the new DOB 12" from Meade.
Any particular objects that show good detail against the light pollution?
Compared to my 10" at f6.3. How much diff.?

Kerry, it is able to pull in detail on the planets and moon, for sure, but that's to be expected. I'm still fighting bright skies for fainter DSOs though, but it brings in more detail. That scope needs dark skies and I still need a shroud for around here. If you travel to dark skies then I would definitely suggest it. How does your 10" SCT work? I've compared a 10" SCT directly with a 12" Dob that my friend has and the Dob was the hands-down winner in the same bright sky.

Tom,
Yeah, I don't travel to dark skies enough like I should but was wondering. I guess I will have to try out some scopes at the various star partys coming up. Over the years I've used mostly my own scopes and haven't done much comparisons.
I hope we can get together so I can try yours.
It's either a 12" DOB or a 12" SCT that I have been looking at getting.
The nod might be leaning towards the Lightbridge. At f5 its probably will do better on faint DSO's than the SCT.

The Lightbridge sure does look like it is a nice scope, Kerry. The biggest problem I have with my Dob is the amount of time required for it to cool down enough to present really good views...I normally don't have that much time...hence the TV102. I'll atleast be able to get out for an hour or two and not worry about bringing the Dob out.

Do you still have the 8" dob? Put a fan on it and you're viewing in 30 minutes. By the time you've checked the charts and written the night's observing list it's cooled down.

You know, I think that the TV102 may be interfering with the bonding between you and Endurance. I think it would be healthier for both of you if the scope took an extended vacation to Maple Valley!

I'll bet you would like that! I do still have the 8" tucked away in the corner of the garage getting all dusty...pitiful, isn't it!

Not really. Everyone should have an 8" dob in their stable. For nights when you don't have time for the the 12.5" but want to see more than you will in a 4" refractor. Dust it off and bring it out some night. With your premium eyepieces it'll be a heckuva scope.

I intend to do just that! I bought some magic sliders and I'm also thinking of adding the 18" legs to the base to get it up in the air a bit more. I love those new tubes that Bryan Greer has but the price is to much for a scope like this to upgrade...I need to make that travel dob, that's what I really need to do, just like this one (only to fit my 8" f/6):

Well lookee here! The masters and mistresses of the firmament are spurning their computer screens and getting together up close & personal, under genuine skies. Any chance you'd let a guy from the blue collar place show up? I promise I'll leave the Aroma back at the tide flats

Well Mike, I don't think it is a closed party, but you'd have to talk to Sky Captain about that.

I live just outside of Belfair, and I can't imagine there being any stipulations on any participants. Even those who struggle with emanations of any kind.

I hope to fit it in, in my summer party schedual.

Rob(Of course it all has to pass over the desk of the CEO first)

I dunno Mike. I tried to tell Sir Pegster we should all get together back at Sunriver and play in minventures' palace of astrotoys but these folks seem to be hellbent on volcanoes....

sigh.

Yep. OAS, Olympic Astronomical Society.

Is the Mt. St. Helen's SP an annual event? Can anyone attend? I don't get out much, and it sure would be nice to get a shower, scrape the mold off and grab my dress bibs for a night out. It'd be nice to meet up with some of CN's finest.

It's open to all, Keith, even Mike! Anyway, I miss my 9mmNT6

Julia, Sunriver is on my shortlist and have every intention of hitting the Mt. Bachelor Star Party this year just so I can harrass Larry.

And I'll get plenty of the Tacoma Aroma just passing thru on my way to St. Helens!

"Mike, it wouldn't be right if you weren't there." Well OK then, I'll just hope it isn't wrong 'cause I am.

You guys think Julia is making up fairytales about the astotoys at Sunriver but I promise, she was holding back, just in case medical attention wasn't immediately available to you. You walk in to the place, see a couple hundred thou. of gleaming aperture on piers (not counting about 100" of Cave & other Dob aperture hanging around), then the button is pushed, the roof rolls back, the white lights turn red, and you look up and see -- yeah, well, it was clouds when we were there. All that fine stuff to be used by the likes of us. Did Julia mention the dozens of EPs in the case? I just about wept.

Tom L, I used the 9 mm in my BVs last night, gathering moonbeams. I'll save a special look for you.

Keith, where in Ore. are you from?

Rob, would you put in a good word with the CEO for me?

You guys are all right!

Mike,

I'm from the sprawling megalopolis of Scappoose.

I also have an idea for everyone if it clouds up so no-one wastes a trip. Bring your NVGs, camo and IR cameras and we can go Bigfoot hunting ...its prime Sasquatch country up on the Mountain and I can't think of anything else fun to do in the dark if we can't break out the scopes. (I actually did this last year near Mt. Hood with a friend...boy did we look like a bunch of freaks. If any nightime Park Ranger had spotted us, he'd have called in the Gendarme for sure!)
