here's tonight's deep but unfiltered shot [Sept 27] of chi Cyg - it's bloated through excess IR radiation. The B-type star top-right is mag 6.44 whilst Chi currently Mv5.5 according to AAVSO

Estimated mag on October 4: 6.0
Chi Cyg was a much brighter max.mag last time compared to this go-around. Questions: Do astronomers know why such a great difference? Do they have any idea? Does the period change (fluctuate) with large mag differences?

The maximum for Chi Cyg can vary from cycle to cycle (don't know why). Chi can reach a maximum of over 4th mag or its maximum can be below 6th mag.
Hope this helps. Rich (RLTYS)

Observed Chi Cyg last evening (10/6), with 12x63 bins, under hazy skies. Chi still appears to be about mag 6.2, used comp stars 60 and 64.

Perhaps of some interest here's some lo-res spectra via my 30cm SCT + Rainbow grating that include chi Cyg from a couple of evenings ago. Chi's profile is remarkable similar to del2 Lyr and XY Lyr also included and fairly representative of 'cool' stars - some 'hot' stars in the right hand column
SRA-type RS Cyg slected as a presumaed carbon Star seems an oddball spectral wise - anyone observing it

Interesting spectra. In observing RS do you mean visually or with a spectroscope? I observe this star visually and its quite red and rising from minimum.
