Meade LXD-500 Mount?
      #101740 - 05/03/04 03:50 PM

Is anyone familiar with this mount? I am looking for a solid mount for my 10 pound SV 80/9d scope to sit on and saw this one on Astromart for a decent price. I don't know very much about them other than the fact that Meade doesn't list it on their website.

I haven't owned one. I think it's the mount they used to offer their 4" achromat with. Pretty similar to a CG5, I think.

Nope, there is one available on AM and I'm trying to find out if it is worth the money the guy is asking. It will be for my SV 80/9d (I'm tired of messing with the Celestron 114GT mount that I currently have).

I've heard (but can't substantiate) that the Meade #492 motor kits bolt right up to that mount for an easy goto conversion.

Tom, I don't know about the LXD500, but I have an LXD300, and it's not a very good mount. My Vixen GPDX is much, much better. I'd suggest you keep a lookout for a Polaris or Super Polaris. I think a GPDX would be overkill for the 80/9; mine is very solid for my AT1010 and my C8.

I used the LXD300 for a couple of years, and I was amazed when I finally got the Vixen and discovered how much smoother and steadier it is.

I was also amazed at the difference when I finally got to try out the fork mount that comes with the Meade LX200 SCT. After my experience with the LXD300 (and the Meade Schmidt-Newtonian I owned before that), I was prepared to believe all Meade equipment was rubbish. However, it seems to me now that their U.S.-made stuff is good quality; it's just the stuff they import from China that is cheaply made, especially the mounts.

Oops. Thanks, Victor. I goofed; I was thinking of the LXD300 when I made the above incorrect post.

The LXD500 is a CG5 clone that Meade used to bundle with an 8" SCT. It'll be similar the the LXD55 without the motors.

Thanks guys, I passed on the mount. I would love to have a Vixen mount to put my SV on.

FYI all - I own an LX500 equatorial fitted out with dual motor drive. It is a beefier mount than the LX300 and was supplied with an 8" SCT (which is the one I bought), an apo, or an achro. These were current models up until the LXD55 models were introduced. I have subsequently moved my 8" SCT onto a Meade LXD650CDS mount and no longer use the LX500. I have to say, however, that I rather like this mount and would not hesitate to put a mid-sized refractor on it. Of course, a lot depends on what kind of shape a used one is in. - Graham
