I would of had them if the postage would have been reasonable to the UK.

I know thats not suprise to you! Recently bought a pair of Hilkington 20x80 3.3 field binoculars ,to add to my small collection . Mint ,unbelievable really ,been stored in a loft for ,what I can guess , might be most , of their lives ! And that was off the 'main' auction site ! has anyone an opinion on these ,I believe they are 70,s made but thats a guess. Thanks for having me !

Hi Noggin I saw the Hilkinsons you bought. I have a few Hilkinsons but not this They are usually fairly good optically. Are they clean internally?.

They appear to be clean as a whistle !! I have been very very busy and not had a clear night or a sunny day to get them out in ,but had a look this afternoon . I still can not get over the fact, they are like new . There is no wear or marks on them or the leather case and the man who sold them described them as new ,but I suppose he did not overstate it , and how many times on E Bay do people call things ,and you find out its all rather different!!I have been incredibly lucky -I dont think you would find a pair like this ,hardly anywhere else ,in this condition ! Having had some 7x 50 Canon Bino,s locally on E bay ,everything else has been c*** until now ,apart from a nice pair of Minolta 10x50,s ZR Wide angle 7 degrees ,that were £34 !

I have bought some cr%* on ebay but I have come lucky many times. My Bushnell Custom 10x50 are in great condition and where listed as Bushnell field glasses(Heavy) so won them for £17. There are bargains to be had.

Yes ,there are bargains true enough ,I had to pay £50 inc postage for the Hilkinsons ,and I would have gone to £60 ,but having seen someone trying to sell a similar pair on a web site for £150 ,I know which is the bargain! Thanks for the kind comments , Now I must do some reading on here and avoid asking silly questions!!

Hi chaps, i recently got into the old binocular thing(though I have had an interest in them for years) I have posted just a couple of times one concerning parts for some old French Lumiere bins and for information regarding the repair(unsticking) of a pair of Wray Braystar 7x50's.
I really like the Wrays nice and light with a good clear view the only problem now is I keep looking on auction sites for more bins! no doubt it will go the way of my other collecting interests ie almost obsessive as funds allow(within reason)I also ride and restore old lightweight racing bicycles from the 1930's up to the 1980's machines and have sheds full of them! I think any bins I get will end up on the book shelves with the old cameras etc!

Here's another of my favorite old binoculars. Wait, I know what you're thinking. Zooms are junk. I thought so, too but took a chance on these and have been very pleased. They hold collimation well through the powers, but focus is a very dynamic endeavor. Perfect condition, but quite heavy and rather narrow field. All in all, a decent instrument for casual daytime use.

Please explain further.

Also, would you do a picture of the bino standing up, so we can see where the zoom lever is positioned.

Nice looking binocular.

"A dynamic endeavor" simply meant that the focus must be constantly adjusted as you zoom in or out. I suspect that's just an artifact of the zoom process, but if you're changing power frequently, it gets cumbersome.

There is no zoom lever, either eyepiece can be turned, although the left is the one that should be used. In this shot, you can see the inner knurled knobs that adjust the power:

Thanks!

Where I live I never seem to get exposed to 'used' binoculars very often. I tried going to a pawn shop, once, but it was a major disappointment.

The correct term of that is that your zoom eyepieces are not parfocal through the zoom range.

Pawn shops are a big dissappointment, I agree. Waste of time really. It used to not be before the age of the internet. My father picked up a Canon L series 1200mm lens for $50. Dude had it mounted on a tripod upside down with a tag that read Telescope, $99. Talked him down to $20 because the image/view sucked.

LOL!

True story.

I've never been in a pawn shop and I had hoped to go in one when I visit my family in Florida. On rt 15 down to Tampa way there a bunch of them. I was hoping to get lucky, but with this thread it don't seem that I will.
I counted 15 to 20 within 20 miles. What's the big disappointment. Remember i've not actually been in one. Here is New Jersey where I live there none period.

Give it a shot. Some areas are better than others. Like near military bases. Brentwood seems to find a lot of good stuff creeping around Canada and the West.

The pickings are getting pretty slim though. Be prepared to see a lot of low end Bushnells (or as they always seem to pronounce them in the US pawn stores 'bush-NELLS') Tascos & Kurt Muellers. And do not tell anyone who has tatoos that works in a store that also sells guns that "Most Bushnells are 'c*ap'" I've had a few close calls in Idaho & Montanna.
For some reason, bush-NELLS there are rated somewhere between Leica & Zeiss!

As you travel farther North, you also travel further Back-in-Time, where things like Mom, Apple Pie, & Bush-NELLS* are a 'suspended' form of Patriotism. What you have there is a Northern version of the Southern Red Neck. Tread Lightly!

halleujah, you are exactly right!
It goes something like this.
"Hi, how you doin'?"
"Jolly good" (I still talk like that sometimes)
"Waddya lookin' fer"
"Ectually, do you have any binoculars"
"You bet your ***, I've got some real purdy bush- NELLS"
"Oh no thanks" (after quickly checking that they aren't Customs or Rangemasters)
"what's wrong with bush-NELLS? you #@%%^ *** *^%%$ Me & my paw always use these when hunting up on Eagle ridge, we also take a gun like this" waves gun in my general direction.
"Never been a big fan of BUSHnls, Thanks anyway! Bye"
