I just purchased an Orion Solar Filter for my Orion XT10 with IntelliScope. I was using it this evening and my mom yelled at me to get in the house cause I will go blind looking at the sun through my scope. I might have to return it but was wondering how safe are these fitlers really? Thanks for clicking, reading, and responding.

Do you (or your mother) honestly think these companies would take a chance on selling you an unsafe filter? Can you imagine the law suits? These filters have been carefully designed and manufactured to save your eyesight and to save the maker's butts from legal action. If that doesn't sound good to you (or mom), I suggest you try to return it or sell it to someone else.

I am totally safe with the idea. But she keeps giving me examples of products that people claimed to be safe but things went wrong that the companies tried to cover up to keep selling there product. Only thing that worries me is if all the sudden the glass breaks from a rock or something while I'm looking through it. But I can imagine myself pulling back quick enough before any true blindness takes place.

Yeah, I used to own a Corvair, but I drove it anyway. I'm assuming you are under 18 years old, so just do what mom tells you until you can convince her otherwise. You must have bought the filter without her knowing.

The only problem that could occur with the Orion filter is that it could fall off (not likely, unless you didn't secure it and are looking at the sun down around the horizon).
The eyepiece screw-in filters are another matter entirely. Possibly, your mom is remembering a warning about these?

No, just products not related to Astronomy that had defects and recalls. I know how safe they are and am fine with the whole idea but she gets nervous easily when it comes to matters like this. I'm sure my father or brother should see it as ok though. Plus, this post was to show her comments from people like you who have great things to say about the filters. And the Filter is VERY secure. I have to really push it on and it is pretty hard to take it off. Thanks.

Full aperture over the end of the scope type solar filters are extremely safe when proper caution is used with them.
Like, I would never let a 10 year old observe un-supervised..ect..ect... Just make sure the filter fits good and snug on the end of the scope. Make sure you either remove or cover the finder scope. (Sometimes people forget about that one)

My best suggestion to you, is to get as much information on solar observing on the web. This way you can inform yourself and show your mom you understand what is involved, that you are taking it seriously and are not getting into it without the proper information. Additionally, you could go with your mom to your local astronomy store and have a talk with the store sales people. They typically are very knowledgable and can go over the procedures with both you and your mom, as well as answer any questions and concerns both she, and you, may have. They may also literally set it up for you in front of you showing you exactly how to do it. many astronomy stores even let you have a look right at the store {if you go on a sunny day}. Good luck to you

Thanks everyone. It stinks for me cause I don't have any Astronomy Stores around (darn shipping bills). But all this information is coming in good and I'm glad to hear it. I am taking this seriously and know how dangerous it can be without the proper equipement, but I read all directions and set it up as it instructed. Have used it and it works great, so, I guess I am doing everything correctly. And I did know about covering the finder scope, which I do do. Thanks everybody.

Really safe way to get a Sun fix. Gerry Hogan We are streaming live solar images from Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory. For most of today, the Ha Coronado Telescope will be on a fantastic active region associated with sunspot 0615. http://www.dyer.vanderbilt.edu/issat_solarstation.htm
