..this spectrum of Vega taken with a Rainbow Optics grating in a 1-1/4" nosepiece on my Canon Rebel coupled to a friend's classic Meade 4" SCT. No drive used - the star and its spectrum allowed to trail in 20 sec exposure. It fairly shows the colour range of the Canon CMOS chip for no enhancement of either colour or contrast used Note the effect of Vega, near zenith at the time, twinkling as horizontal lines and slight deformation of vertical [hydrogen ] lines I'll post more stars taken during the session soon. Hope it's of interest

Yes this is very interesting to me. Do you have more info on equipment, techniques and useful projects. I'm looking for worthwhile stuff to do from my home location which isn't great for quality astro photography and spectroscopy has always interested me (I was once a research chemist)

Thanks Tonk – I’ve been doing spectro for over three decades initially with film [Vega sample below from 1980!] and pioneered CCD use from early 1990s culminating in my powerful homebuilt Littrow WPO spectrograph.in the late ‘90s.
My homepage is loaded with spectro stuff . My main spectro homepage contains many observing projects including solar, asteroid, all planets [Merc- Pluto], variable stars, Wolf-Rayet stars, quasar red-shifts etc
Here’s some of my equipment project links covering prisms and gratings - both transmission and reflective types…..

Hi Maurice:
Thanks for your post and links. I've wanted to dip into spectroscopy since I was a teenager, but haven't wanted to invest the time or money.
However, your links led to an option of using a Cokin #45 diffraction filter which requires little time and money. I've tracked one down on ebay, and have jury-rigged it onto my Canon 300D, so I'm hoping to try it soon.
I'll post if I get it to work. I tried it with just my camera lens, but it only worked on the moon. I'm hoping that the extra light gathering of my 8" Newt will work on at least the brighter stars.
Hopefully more soon,
Michael

WOO HOO! It works!
At least in principle. I'm including a single frame (time limited right now).
Vega - 15 sec at ASA800.
Hopefully more soon,
Michael

I bought a SBIG DSS-7 two months ago and this is very nice equipment. http://www.sbig.com/dss7/dss7.htm
I have made a spectra of Vega with a telescope Meade LX200R 8" and the DSS-7. This is my calibrated spectra with a Planck curve (14000 K) :
-------------------- Newton 200/800, 200/1200, 100/1000

Hi Michael - sorry for delay - haven't looked at this posting for a while Excellent result - there's lots of info in there including maybe an M type star centre right

...which I find is variable XY Lyrae north of Vega - the VS exposure is spot-on eg not saturated. As Robin says the Rainbow and Staranalyser gratings are more efficient but that Cokin grating filter a great buy
