Um, isn't Atlas Eclipticalis & Atlas Australis listed twice in the above? Shouldn't they be removed from the top list?

Also, is there a reason HNSKY was left off the second (PLANETARIUM PROGRAMS AND SOFTWARE) list??

Carol, I do not know how to create a direct link to another post but Ralph [user name: Ralph McIntosh] posted two pics in one post over in the refractor forum. The post is #1154172 - 09/18/06 04:09 PM (on the last page [13] on my system) of the "Post a Pic of Your Refractor(s)!" thread. Apparently it can be done!

You mean these two?

Ok, that definitely confirms my suspicion that images need their own URL in order for them to be included in multi-image posts. All fine and well if you've got an online image-cache site, but those who don't will need to post the images as single attachments in another CN thread, obtain a URL for each image, and work from there.

But for the time being we still have to get a final decision from the Admins whether or not the image-thing will be allowed (these things take time ).
It may be ok with copyright law, but if it's not ok with the TOS then I guess the whole thing goes bye-bye. But that's ok.. we're all guests here at CN and the last thing we want to do is throw a party with illegal stuff floating around.

It may not be okay with copyright law either. I've been poking around in books and atlases on my shelf and keep finding "All rights reserved," with no "for purposes of review" loopholes. Things seem to have tightened up since I last took a professional interest in these matters (all of five or so years ago!) Regardless of what the TOS allows, we may need to contact the publishers and obtain permission in order to post images of sample pages. (Time consuming, but do-able. And I'm willing to take that chore on and leave you guys to the review writing, if it comes to that.)

Images can be combined into one file using Microsoft Picture Editor, then connected and filed into Cloudy Nights as one image. This way, several images will appear because they are all considered one image by the download protocol.

A potential problem with that, Don, is due to the system limitations on pic size on CN, the one image may not be worth viewing if there's too much data. Don't know for sure, just another thought to consider.

Images could also be posted in each member's gallery space, rather than as a post on CN, and then the gallery image/URL is used to link into the review to have more than one image (same concept as using Kodak or Photo Bucket or one of those, but if you're a CN member, you already have CN gallery space...). At least, I think that should work...

I'm finding that out, too. In doing 'fair use' research this weekend, it appears the laws are fluid at best. The general advice is to ask permission whenever you're not sure, and to keep all correspondence for future referral.

Thanks so much for offering to contact the publishers, but that's quite a load for one person. Would it be easier if you composed and posted a form letter we could all use? That is, unless you'd rather keep all of the correspondence archived in one place. It's up to you.

In the past, I've compressed images in '2-for-1' attachments and although they didn't look 'too' terrible, they definitely lacked by way of comparison to the original un-compressed images.

And yes, we could link to larger gallery images, but first let's wait and see what the Admins say about all this.. I hope we get clearance for the images as long as we can get permission from the publishers to post them.

Part of the delay, if I might spill a secret , is that most of the Admins were at various star parties all weekend. Off playing when they should be doing their unpaid jobs here, what's up with that anyway??

*sigh* My skies weren't bad, though a tad cloudy yesterday after storms came through during the day (but man has it been nice and cool and comfy today!), but I've been sick for several days so couldn't enjoy 'em anyway.

Using a snippet of one chart in a review shouldn't be a copyright issue. Reading an updated opinion on free use (Publishing Law Center) what is proposed here is a pretty safe bet...

1) it's non-commercial, non-profit
2) the material is not creative but fact based
3) the purpose is instructional and critical in a review form.
4) the amount used (a portion of one chart) is not substantial, iow, no one would find that a chart of Orion would negate or devalue the entire book.
5) The effect of the use is positive for the publisher; the reviews function more like advertising than anything else as the purpose is to help a buyer select the right atlas for their purposes.

If you want to play it safer, i can host the sample pictures on my server and the only thing here will be a link, so any liability will be mine as the host. i'm not the least bit worried about that.

I'm thinking it might be better if one person handles it, just for the sake of simplicity.

But Mardi's link to copyright information might give us the "out" we need. I need to take the time to review it more carefully.

Thanks for the link, Mardi! (Btw, Part 2 is interesting, too.) And thanks for your generous offer to host the images. Not sure if we'll need to take you up on it or not, but it was very thoughtful of you.

to no one in particular...
The author of the article certainly seems to say what we want to hear, but is the information current? The article was written 10 years ago and unless I missed something, I couldn't find any notation that it had been updated (although I did find the disclaimers ).

Hopefully most of what he wrote still holds, but (jmho) I'd feel safer getting permission from the publishers rather than do guesswork on this.

I agree. Which atlas did you want to do as a "sample" review for purpose of discussion? I'll contact that publisher and we can make this a trial run for the entire thing.

Knopf is part of Random House, and according to their website the permission process can take 3 to 5 weeks.

If this is typical, no one needs to rush to get anything written up!
