Thanks everyone for the posts.....and thanks QHY for such a great camera.....I really appreciate the improved processing Dennis.....your great! I hope to get more time to image in the next few weeks. Hopefully practice and use will bring out even more great images from this camera. I really appreciate the time QHY took to write the Maxim plugin.....really a big help. Later.....
Yeah, credit to QHY! If nothing changes my mind, I will study the same course in the future and be his worker one day.

Here is a testing image with no uncovering and covering of the objective. Clearly shows the need for a shutter.
The QHY 8 ccd does not need a shutter as do the rest of the sony chips as they are not full frame like the 6303E is.
not sure i follow. can you explain what's going on in this image?

Its hard to explain but some ccds' like the sony have inbuilt circuity into which the charge from the pixels can be moved to. A kind of inbuilt electronic shutter. Now this extra circuity will take up pixel space making this type off cdd less sensitive.
Other chips like the kodak full frame series do not have this circuitry so are more sensitive. These chips read out the image row by row. As the bottom row shifts into the readout area the charge from the above rows shifts down until the entire ccd is readout.
Whilst readout is happening pixels are still sensitive to light so continue to record causing the streaking pattern seen above.
So with these ccd's you need to use a shutter infront of the ccd so the pixels cannot record light during readout.

SONY interline CCD, by its name, has a separate buried vertical charge transport structure whilst KAF6303E use the same CCD well for both photon sensing and vertical charge-transport thus requires mechanical shutter to stop the incident light during charge-transport read-out phase.

Man that just went way over my head. Thanks for the explanation. All I know is I could use one.

Here a shot where i used a peice of black card to act as the shutter.
Taken last night just about 10mins total exposure time. Conditions here in the uk were pretty bad but i was out testing the polarscope for the GM8 i borrowed. Dew covered the objective hence the lack of detail in the center...
Plan to return to this one later on a better night.

Another nice image Jan! I take it you are liking this camera a lot?
I finally got a 2" adapter for mine and tried it out. Looks like it is going to work quite well once I get my autoguiding down.
Keep them coming.

My camera has a Sony CCD with no shutter. It has a QE of between 55% and 65%. I don't get the shutter thing either. Perhaps a more layman's explanation?

Hi Chad,
Yes i do like this camera, for the price there is nothing comparable. I look forward to seeing your images. I dont know if you remeber but we had a chat about the 6302CE and QHY camera via email some time ago. You were very helpful so thanks.

That's icx285al, progressive scan ExView HAD. This type reads out the whole frame in one shot {and stores such info in (light-shielded) vertical register} thus there is no need to use mechanical shutter.
Earlier descriptions are either on Kodak 6303E or other type of Sony.

Thanks for the news...that will be the Sony chip then as used by Starlight Xpress - has the standard IR block filter been removed?

Would this camera perform better in suburban light polluted environment than a modded EOS350D (Rebel XT)?

I think so YES. I tested this my new camera yesterday, under very poor conditions, directly from suburban town of 100 thousnad city in Czech Republic, in between of streetlights. Limiting naked eye magnitude approx. 3.5mag
I combine one 5-minute and one 1-minute exposure with standard processing (Dark, Bias, Flat). Then log. scale and mild color balance and crop in Adobe PS. Newtonian 190mm f/3.7 with Paracorr was used as imaging equipment.
Dynamic range of sensor and 16 bit A/D conversion is enough for "fight" with high level of sky background in image.
Here is the result:
