Congratulations Marcus. I have been one of them (several times). I especially like the way you keep us all posted as you make changes to equipment - including your logbook - it's very helpful to see in detail what others are doing. You obviously are having a great time managing your observatory. Keep up the great work!!! Keith Schlottman

Weeeeeeeeell...I hate to rain on your parade here Marcus, but not really. Every time I went back to your index page, I got counted. You need a counter that logs unique visitors, not page loads

Thanks for the comments Keith.
You are correct Chris, the counter counts pages loads. So…the index page has been loaded over 50K times. For me, I still consider it a milestone.

When someone comes to my home who has been there before I don't discount them as a visitor simply because they have been there before ... so just as in my home, repeat visitors to my website are still visitors and I value the repeat visitor far more than the unique visitor. If you are selling on line, repeat visitors are your bread and butter and the new visitors are frosting on the cake. Congrats on reaching 50K!!!!

But you don't count a visitor in your home each time they walk from one room in your house, to another room, and then back to the original room again, do you?
The issue is counting "visits", not "page loads".
Of course repeat visitors are great, that's what you want. But you shouldn't be increasing the visit count each time they load a page on your site. I think you misunderstood what the issue was about.

When I used to run a game server my website had over 36000 different Ips visit it. per month
Unfortunately the company who made the game wouldnt let me sell advertising on thier game.
I know its not astro related but that is an incredible amount of people more than many commercial sites im sure.
Im planning to finish off my nature photography website and then make my new astro site.
Good job on making the 50000 mark though.
Alex

Keith;
I am certain that your observatory and web site have been an inspiration to others trying this same type of robotic observatory. Regardless how you count the people visiting to see your results, congratulations and I hope you continue on to 100,000 and more.

I have a suggestion here. If you use CSS to align your webpage, it will be great.

I love CSS... Complete use of it on my site... As well as Strict XHTML 1.1 throughout...
I hit 30k recently.. I'm averaging just over 3k a month now.

Totally remade my photo website today took about 4 hours to code the php and mysql and i just need to finish off the css styles then i can start adding content.
Any1 else use php/mysql here i want to make an interactive star chart gallery on my astrosite so people can add pictures to the map of different clusters etc. But the calculations are quite complex for solar orbits. I think if I did that the processing would have to be done client side as the workload of all those calculations for every star would overwhelm the server. I always find it quite hard to keep to w3c standards though.
Good luck and Clear Skies

I've done my site in all PHP... But nothing really complex.
Don't think you can do client side with PHP... Unless you can port some of the work to Javascript perhaps.
I fully understand the keeping up with standards bit.. Going fully XHTML Strict was a nightmare for me... So much of THAT code instruction is not readily available, and the W3C online checkers don't do anything to tell you how to correct errors!!! But, all my pages are good now.

I just try my best to follow the w3c validation, not forced to do so.

I'm not forced either. But I will work for full compliance... Something held over from when I was a website award giver. Proud of what I've done...

Cool. By the way, I found that the validation errors of my blog is mostly the forgivable.
