The impression I picked up earlier was that 'historical' would be a catagory for references that are out of print and have no current incarnations. Which is why I said what I did in the material Carol has quoted.

Hi Mardi, I really don't know how to answer you.

All I did was express a desire to see an organized thread with samples of the star atlases we use. Others expanded my idea to include discussions and mini-reviews.

Not to worry though, I'm sure the links you mentioned will eventually wind up in the appropriate publication discussion, and if anyone wants to write a formal Review, they still can (and have always been able to).

I think the main difference would be that here we would have a quick reference for people who are shopping around, not in-depth reviews. It would (I hope!) compliment flat out reviews and not be redundant. Remains to be seen how well it will work out, but there's certainly no harm and going forward with it.

Ah, ok, i was just curious. What with all the 'contacting publishers' etc it sounded like a more involved endeavor than just a sneak peak sort of thing. I guess i am still not too clear on exactly what these quick references would contain or consist of... I'd help writing some (re; the few stellar atlases i have & use for doubles) but it'd probably be best to just wait until it's all shaken out a bit more...

That's okay, Mardi. I'm not at all sure, all the time, exactly where this is going either. That's why Carol is going to produce a sample for us to whack around and check for cracks.

As for the permissions, what we're talking about reproducing so people can make meaningful comparisons, exceeds (as far as I know at this point) acceptable fair use due to being produced on the internet. A few copies handed out at a club meeting would not cause a publisher any concern. A page potentially visible to millions, that's apparently another matter. (And explains why not everything Amazon sells has sample pages to view.)

It may turn out to be an unnecessary concern (at least in some cases), but it can't hurt and may well earn us a tiny bit of extra respect out there in the big bad world.

I'm almost done with the publishers' list, but need some help. Amazon.com gave me two results of a title search on 'Collins Stars'. They're pretty similar but have different authors and publishers.

"Collins Gem: Stars (Collins Gem)" by Ian Ridpath and Wil Tirion
Published by HarperCollins (September 27, 2005)

"Stars (Collins Gem)" by Geoffrey W. Potts
Published by Trafalgar Square Publishing (April 2000)

Would whomever added it to the list please check their copy and let me know which one it is? Thanks!

Also, I'm gathering the links of the online charts and have all of them except the 'John Small Free Telrad charts'. Anyone have a live one?

Mine is the "9th impression, 1974"

Re: Charts, Atlases and Programs new [Re: Carol L]
      #1177264 - 10/02/06 02:58 PM

amended October 2nd, 2006

A Field Guide to Stars and Planets
was: Peterson's Guide to the Stars and Planets

Atlas of Nearby Galaxies
was: Tully's Nearby Galaxies Atlas

Atlas of the Heavens
was: Skalnate-Pleso Atlas of the Heavens (aka Atlas Coeli by Antonin Becvar: desk, deluxe, and field versions)
>note: Searches pointed me towards sites which listed the name of the book as 'Atlas of the Heavens', so that's what the title was amended to. 'Skalnate-Pleso' seems to be the name/location of an observatory, and 'coeli' loosely translates to 'heaven'.

Collins Stars
(Omitted till we find out which publication is being referred to)

Norton's Star Atlas and Reference Handbook, 20th Edition
was: Norton's

Sky & Telescope's Pocket Sky Atlas
was: Pocket Sky Atlas

Sky Atlas 2000.0
was: Sky Atlas 2000, desk, field, and deluxe versions

The Edmund mag 6 Star Atlas
was: Edmund Mag 5 Star Atlas (mag 5 atlas not found in searches.. I'm assuming the mag 6 is the most recent edition?)

The Messier Album
was: Mallas & Kreimer Messier Album

The Observer's Sky Atlas: With 50 Star Charts Covering the Entire Sky
was: The Observer's Sky Atlas by Karkoschka

Uranometria 2000.0
was: Uranometria 2000.0, 1st and 2nd editions

'Collins Stars' has been removed from the list, pending verification by the original contributor as to which of two publications they were referring to. (Scroll back to previous posts to read my verification request.)
The rest of the above amendments are title corrections I came across while searching for the publishers. Also, I've placed the publisher's name behind the book titles, and have placed URLs beneath the free, downloadable online charts.

The 'planetarium programs and software' section hasn't been done yet, but will be amended as the information is found.

Tom, I'll make a separate post for you with everything grouped by publisher.

Almost like having to wait for clear skies, ain't it?

The 'National Audubon Society Field Guide to the Night Sky' scan was sent to you on 9/25.. iirc they said 3-5 weeks so they're not even overdue yet. In any case, I'll start putting the Fact Sheet together.

Don, in order to clean up the quoted list, I'll insert the new one you posted. (Btw, how much are those Palm Pilots? I'm so technologically impaired it's pathetic. )
