Hi, I'm thinking of getting a Meade Flip Mirror(#644 or #647) to use with the Celestron F6.3 Focal Reducer on my C5 for imaging with my Canon 300D DSLR. I've got some questions on the configuration: 1) I've heard that the eyepiece on the Flip Mirror may not reach focus if the focal reducer is in front of the Flip Mirror (that is C5, follow by F6.3 Focal Reducer, follow by Flip Mirror and finally my DSLR)... is this true??
2) If the above is true, I'm thinking of mounting the focal reducer behind the flip mirror (that is C5, follow by Flip Mirror, follow by F6.3 Focal Reducer and finally my DSLR). Will this configuration work??
3) Also, will the Meade #644 Flip Mirror cause any further vignetting when use with the Canon DSLR (bigger chip)?? The Meade #647 is quite expensive, so I'll just get the Meade #644 Flip Mirror if the vignetting is not that serious.
Thanks and have a nice day.

Weixing,
Welcome to CN!
I suggest take a different approach, e.g., guidescope or autoguiding.
(1) it won't reach focus. That's how F.R. works.
(2) FR requires additional in-focus travel. So if C5 with flip-mirror + DSLR already extended the distance (i.e., flipmirror distance), then adding a FR won't do anything good.
(3) #644 is a 1.25" type so it will be severely vignetting. #647 (40mm clear aperture) is much better (it is the same size as the T mount inner thread) but $$$. That's why I stated take an alternate approach.
Clear Skies!

The 647 is really designed for mounting the camera via T-mount. I recently bought one and was somewhat upset that it did not include a 2 inch camera adapter. I ended up getting around this with an adapter that I bought but be careful as your focal reducer will not mount easily. You might be better off considering a Taurus tracker. Good luck.

Hi, I want to avoid the guidescope option as I'm only using a Vixen GP mount. Also, Taurus tracker is really out of my budget... I'm doing small budget Astrophotography...
Hmm... Anyone got any idea what is the clear aperture size of the camera port on Meade #644 and Meade #647? Just wonder are they the same since they both use T-thread at the camera port. If it the same, I think if I mount my Focal Reducer behind the Meade #644 (that is C5, Meade #644 Flip Mirror, Focal Reducer and DSLR), I may be able to get away with the vignetting (I hope :P ) if it can reach focus.
But first, I'll test whether can the Focal Reducer reach focus on my DSLR by mounting a extension tube to simulate the length of the flip mirror (that is C5, extension, Focal Reducer and DSLR).
Thanks and have a nice day.

Hi, I also saw this information at one of the Meade catalog, but it is written as: #644: Mirror clear aperture: 22mm. #647: Mirror clear aperture: 40mm.
So I was wondering whether is it refer to the view port for the eyepiece (#644 is 1.25" and #647 is 2") or the camera port??
Anyone got the Meade #644 can help to check this??
Thanks and have a nice day.

I don't understand how a flip mirror could in someway substitute guiding or autoguiding. As I understand it, one of the two outputs will always be closed, right? So, no double vision...

it does... but it does allow you to get your camera mounted and ready, flip over to an eyepiece to find your target. Then flip back to the camera for the shot. The draw back is the mounts tracking is all the guiding you will get.
you may want an off axis guider, if you want to do both. nice large opening, shorter then a flip mirror but can be a pain in the keester to find a suitable guide star off the tiny prism that you get for the eyepiece.
