Mercury transit: my first Ha solar sketches
      #1243950 - 11/09/06 07:39 PM

Here are the first sketches I've ever done at the eyepiece of a solar scope. I'm thrilled at the level of detail and the exciting changes that occur in such a brief period of time. Strangely, Lady Luna spurned me later that evening, by pulling a deep shroud of fog over her waning face. So what's up with that!

No doubt! Rich, you blew me away with your full disk sketch. The others were beautifully done too, but that full disk sketch was amazing. Did you submit it yet for the transit contest?!

As for the clouds you got, it was bright and beautiful here up till an hour or so before the transit. Then it was dark gray until late that night, when it cleared up again! But by that time I was exhausted and just couldn't bring myself to get the big fella out for observing the night skies.

Thank you Les and Erika! Sorry nature conspired to keep you guys from seeing the event. It was truly spectacular. Regarding my next, ironically when my friend and I were setting up, he noticed the strange appearance of rust colored spots on the SM60 objective. Yikes! The dreaded orange crud had developed on his emaculately cared for filter. It has only seen solar exposure about ten times since purchasing it new two years ago. It is kept in a case and is fully sealed against the weather. So back to Meade Coronado it goes. I guess my next opportunity will come when it returns.

Erika I did enter the contest, thank you for calling it to my attention. I stupidly sent the colored sketch to Dr. Phillips via his webmaster email, before finding the link for the contest. I've rectified the situation now however.

Strange. That's the first I've heard of the oxidation on the 60mm. From what I've read, it should have only been the 40mm lenses of the PSTs, although someone stated they had it on their SM40. I'd like to hear about the progress on that, please.

I thought the same when he first noticed it Erika. We swung the scope down and took a close look and sure enough, little orange randomly located spots and a orange ring around the edge of the objective. Looks like every picture I've seen of this condition. Those vacuum packs must have been failing for some time it appears.

Rust on an SM60 is worrying. The front element on the SM60 scope is the etalon - is that where the rust was? Or did you remove the etalon to look?

Sol, thanks man!

Les, I'm not sure exactly what surface was affected. It looked like something deep in the objective, beyond that it's all greek to me.

Holy..., Rich!

I first thought you pulled a joke by putting a photo in your post.

That is one super 'full disk' sketch

How do you keep track of the 'granulation' on the disk? I would get lost very easy.

YES!!

That is so stunning, I can hardly believe it. Great work on both the monochrome and color versions, Rich!

Sheesh. I just went back and checked out the layering of yellow you added at the heart of the color sketch. Very very cool!

Thanks so much Rony, Sally and Jeremy!

Rony, I realized in the first five minutes at the scope that I wouldn't be able to do anything but to suggest the roiling granules that cover the face of the Sun. That required creating little squiggles (randomized marks) that when seen from a distance combine to create that visual sensation. Although I took clues from the real surface, such as the way the limb regions seem a slightly deeper red, while those at the center of the solar disc are brighter and seem more suffused with yellow light (perhaps as much to do with the "sweet spot" in the field of view of an Ha scope) , I found that I could only hint at these profoundly detailed structures. After all consider the difficulty of sketching a single body the takes light traveling 186,000 miles per second fully 4.65 seconds to cross it's diameter. There's one heck of a lot of detail packed in that radiant sphere.

Sally, it was such a fantastic event and as I set up to do my first sketch, I thought of your well wishes for a successful event! Sure enough, that was exactly what came about. Now if I could just get my hands on another SM60.... Too fun to stop now!

Jeremy, I grabbed my simple sketch kit as I left the house and strangely the only two color pencils in this kit were the red and yellow Conte' pencils. As it turned out that was all I really needed to complete this sketch. Well, That and a couple of good erasers. Oops!

kraterkid

That is one fantastic sketch. If you had told us it was a photo I'd believe you. I've never seen a sketch quite like that before. Don't know how you did it. Give us more.

Thanks Rich!

Sadly I was going to borrow the SM60 from my friend Tom, however, when setting up for the transit, we happened to notice some kind of strange spots that had formed deep inside the objective. Consequently, he is sending it back to Coronado/Meade for repair. Eventually I'll get my chance again, and I'll be happy to post my results.

Rich,

Your full disk color sketch is an excellent, realistic, and definitive rendering of the view in Ha. Beyond that, words fail me.

Thanks Michael! I deeply appreciate your kind words, especially in light of the wonderful solar sketches you have drawn over the course of the time you've been a member here. I remember the first Ha sketch I saw of yours that showed the graceful arc of a prom over the sun's limb. It was so inspiring, I wanted to try my hand at Ha solar sketching immediately. It wasn't until I met my friend Tom and subsequently discovering that he had a SM60, that my dream was fulfilled. The happenstance of a Mercury transit proved very fortuitous for my first attempt.

Thanks, Rich--the forum is a great place to find inspiration of all kinds.

I've been a little slow getting around to look at all the images and sketches of the Mercury transit, partly because my satellite connection is messing up (again) and partly because I was still very disappointed about being clouded out for the transit (not sulking exactly--just thinking about how old I'll be in 2016 if I'm around at all ).
When I saw your sketch, I cheered right up.

Well I was certainly, sulking, especially with our clear skies the morning of teasing me into having false hope.

I think I'm getting over it now.

People mentioned it before...this looks really amazingly stunning, it could easily go for a photograph.
I guess, if I didn't know any better, I'd never believe that this was really drawn by hand.
Fantastic!
