My PST (Serial No. 96603) has “brown rust” on the front lens elements and earlier this month has been returned to Coronado through the local dealer here (in Hong Kong) for the necessary repairs.

You can add mine to the list, #101344, blue transparent lenses and rust free. I'm London, mind you, due to the lack of clear days we get here, it wouldn't make any difference if the lenses was completely rusted over and then painted black

The serial number of my PST is 99193, well within the
range of sick scopes. It is supposed to have a blue
front lense, but it is more like brown, and its colour
is not homogenous. I do not think it can be from the
gold series, but I have no comparison and can not
remember what it looked like when it was new. I am
sending some pictures, and there are some more at
http://atomki.hu/~kfpal/scoperust/
Please, someone who has some experience tell me if it
is a case of the rust problem, as I believe. I bought
the scope from Adorama in November, 2005, when my
daughter stayed in the US, actually in Irvine. Now
the scope is in Hungary, and I have no one in the US.
Even if Meade were willing to ship the repaired scope
to Hungary, I would probably have to pay quite a lot
of duty and tax. I actually bought a few things from
Meade outlet, most faulty, so I am not really impressed
with their QC.

Thanks very much in advance, best regards,

Karoly, Debrecen, Hungary

Looks pretty rusty to me!!
Why not try Meade in Germany or failing that, Broadhurst Clarkson and Fuller in the UK may be able to help. They have someone who is trained by Meade to do the repair and they have a very rapid turn around. Surely you wouldn't have to pay duty and taxes if the item is being returned after repair?

Bill's right, try to keep it in the EU and you should save a good deal of money on the fees & duties. It is rusty, though, I hate to tell you. It's the dreaded creeping rust!

kfjpal,

Meade Germany service is very good and they will instruct a transport agency to pick up your PST at Hungary at no cost for you. They did it perfectly with my PST at Spain.

Contact them by phone or e-mail (service.apd@meade.de).

It's the best option for your rusty PST, IMHO.

Good luck.

Dear Bill, Rich and Julio,
Thanks for your reply and your suggestions. Now I
know I should act. Actually, I do not see much
haze around the sun some with the rust problem
complained about, the surrounding looks still
reasonably dark, but as far as I remember the
contrast used to be better. I thought that either
the Sun is calmer, or my eyes I getting worse...
So thanks very much again, best regards, Karoly

Karoly,

Your picture looks like your front lens was plenty of rust. Some people reported lack of contrast with rusty lens but do not wait for this situation.

Contact Meade Germany inmediately as the brown/orange haze will become worse even it seems not to affect safety. That's my advise.

Remember, try to get your PST picked up at your home when contacting them. If you don't mention this they will suggest you sending the PST to Rhede, Germany at your expense.

Well I wrote an e-mail on Monday (2nd April) to Meade
Europe, to the address Julio gave me, no reply so far.
Unfortunately, I did not ask them to pick the scope up
(Julio's advice came too late for that), but they have
not replied anyway. Some time next week I will try again.
Best wishes, have a good Easter time, Karoly

Hmmm ... sorry Karoly. Meade Europe used to reply quickly to my e-mails.

Insist by sending more e-mails. If no success, try to phone them. Phones are available at their website (see my link below).

My contact there used to be Mr. Rügiger Maass but I noted before posting that he is no longer in charge of the division of Meade APD as seen in their website. Instead him you can find Sven Koenigsfeld. See this link:

http://www.meade.de/en/about-us/employees.html

Insist and be patient. I guess they are now receiving lots of claims about PSTs with the "disease".

You can agree about picking up your PST at Hungary upon their reply. No problem, I suppose.

Good luck Karoly.

Richard,

Another for the list, 100657 is sick as well. I just took delivery it used yesterday. After Texas Star Party 2007, it will go back, hopefully with a nice blue lens in return.

About a 1/4 inch obvious greenish/rusty looking color ring. Funny thing to me is, it is concentric. Like it happens from the outside of the lens in. It looks like mold to me.

Bummer, Barry! I hope you got a discount from the seller for defective merchandise...
I hope it gets fixed fast! I added you to the list in my laptop, I'll post the revised list soon... Haven't seen too many new sick PSTs lately, maybe this is a good sign?

Not to worry Rich, it was discounted. I probably did not get a great deal, but I certainly feel like I got a reasonable deal. I just have to go to the trouble of getting it fixed by Meade.

What about the double stack filter? I does not have issues with the rust, right?

Thanks!

If I buy a PST second hand can I still get warranty service to get the rust fixed?

Hi JD,

It is my understanding that Meade, they bought Coronado, is fixing any PST with the rust problem. My particular PST came with paperwork indicating a shipped date of April 14, 2006.

I have not yet tried to get a RMA, but unless you are overseas, I think all you have to do to get it "fixed" is to contact Meade, and wait...Hopefully, not too long!

Can someone please confirm or deny my assumptions?

Thanks!

Hi Everyone!

I finally registered so as to add my PST to the list. S/N 96512

I've been away from astro stuff for awhile now and while browsing for more "wanted - PST" ads, I stumbled across this thread and Erix' nice summary of the issue.

I've owned the PST for less than 2 years now and indeed! it unfortunately has the rust, denser at the objective edges, but also noticeable in the center. It has the a blue coated objective. I left a message for Mr Wiggins today.

Well, if all turns out well, it just might jump-start me back into solar observing and rekindle the wonder I had for the night.

Thanks much to all (esp. the moderators) for this wonderful resource --- Cloudy Nights Forums.
