That exit came at the 468.7 mile mark in the journey.

On the road south, you should be able to see the silhouette of the mountains off in the distance.

I was actually trying to take a pic of the mountains again through the windshield, but caught this "Seismic Crew Ahead" sign. They apparently were laying some kind of cables across the roadway, I didn't see the crew but saw (and felt) the cables taped down in several places.

More mountains as I got closer...I actually stopped by the side of the road to take a few, including this one.

This zoom shot was also from the side of the road, not the moving vehicle that all the others were from.

Now I'm actually within the mountains; I won't post any more as I'm sure I've bored everyone already but liked this formation. Once I get home and get time, I'll put more on my website.

At last!! 542.6 miles after starting, I'm sitting parked in front of the Hotel Limpia in Fort Davis, Texas (which is why the seat belt light is on). I got here at 1:40pm (Central).

Here's a pic of the side (might be the front entrance, but not the street side) of the Hotel Limpia. They also have several separate buildings.

Across the main street from the Hotel Limpia is the Old Texas Inn. This building includes, among other things...

...the infamous Fort Davis Drug Store, where many a TSP'er goes during TSP week to have a yummy chocolate malt or similar confection. I got a head start and had one with lunch after I arrived.

Here's a pic of the main street side of the Hotel Limpia. That's my trusty black Honda CR-V there in front on the left.

And finally, last pic. I got there early and so my room wasn't ready. Also, due to a snafu with scheduling, I got upgraded from a room to a suite. So while they finished up on getting Suite 12 ready (which is in one of the separate buildings I mentioned before), I went and ate lunch at the Drug Store (with the aforementioned chocolate malt!), and wandered around and took a whole more pics than are posted here of the Hotel and its charming grounds. I'll post more as time permits or on my website.
Hope you enjoyed some of my "trip to TSP" -- just wait until I actually start taking pictures of TSP itself!

"you promise you haven't bought any new telescopes recently: Right, Dennis?" Only my new 15 mm Panoptic!
Doing my best to attract the various rainman nebula back to California but unfortunately it's beautiful, warm and clear here. In other words a perfect night to try and observe Larry's list from downtown Benicia!

Thanks for the kind words Steph. Seeing pics of the Hotel Limpia made me feel homesick. Hope you get lots of clear nights but watch out for the crazy Fort Bendonites at the N. end of the upper field if it's cloudy. Fortunately they are easy to spot as they glow a neon green in the dark the result of an ill-fated prank from a few years back!

That flat mountain in the middle is "Star Mountain", at about 6300', IIRC. It's one of the taller ones that area. TX 17 winds all around it on the way to Fort Davis.

To start with...There's a lot of flatness in Texas.
I got news for ya, laddie - That's not flatness! Come to Louisiana and you'll see REAL flatness. If there's a ripple to be seen on the horizon, that makes it a mountain in Louisiana!! :-)

Well, I'm sitting in my room at the Best Western in Ozona, obviously bored (otherwise, why would I be commenting on every photo Steph took??). I found a couple of geocaches in Ozona and I'm trying to wind down for an early (by my standards) beddie-bye time, followed by an even earlier start tomorrow morning...
See you at the Ranch.

I'm a sucker for a good rock formation. That's a nice one. Maybe Llanitedave can tell us what it is.
