Tom,
I think I've earned a Get Out of Jail card for the next time one of your Mods jumps on me, don't you agree?

He had it at a star party here in Wisc. last month, but I wasn't there. I'll have to ask him if he's planning to bring it to Australia this fall.

Tell Dave to bring one of those to BTHRSP next month!!!!!
T, I don't think there is a "one of those" -- that one is it. He said he's only had it a couple of weeks and it's even still being tweaked. For instance, as Darrell said, he intends to make the poles 1.25" in diameter, but the poles in the prototype pictured here are 1"; Dave's decided to make them a little bigger. He mentioned some hardware changes too. But it's very cool looking in person! He didn't have the exact weight but estimates total weight at about 60 pounds; the bottom part without the UTA is about 12" tall. Portability is the name of the game here.
Well, THAT One then.

This photo shows the UC's reverse mirror cell. It's designed this way for clearance issues. There is no mirror box.
Dave Kriege demonstrating the attachment of the altitude encoder bracket to the rocker box. The encoder arm attaches to the altitude bearing. The Argo Navis computer clips on the truss tube.

Cool scope.
I'll have to wait till he writes another book and build one myself.

Kinda wierd feeling, isn't? I still can't get use to the idea that that scope is an "Obsession"!
I don't know. Its definately going to take some getting use to!

Good thing you all have something new under the sun (or stars) to "obsess[ion]" about - the National Weather Service forecast for Alpine, TX the rest of the week is rather heinous for a star party in semi-desert country. Lots of "mostly cloudy with 50% chance of thunderstorms" at night.
Of course, often such forecasts cause a "reverse jinx" and skies clear up beautifully around midnight for the vampires and caffeinated among you.

That looks a lot like Greg Babcock's design (and there are a few others who have made similar designs). Very nice.
Is he planning on making anything larger than an 18"? I'd be interested in a 20"-24"!

Well, as long as it's not about ladders...
BTW - what is the height on the 18" - it looks like it's GOT to be shorter than the regular version.
Any word on shroud attachments?

It looks to be a touch under 6' 6" at its tallest point, where the secondary attaches. I'm not sure how tall Dave and James are, but you can judge the height of the UC from the following photo. The eyepiece height looks just about right for Dave standing flatfooted.
BTW, I met Dave going to TSP registration and mentioned I'd posted a report on CN. He mentioned some podunk town in Michigan and asked of you lived there. I said I thought so. He said he's thinking of dropping one by for you to review when he goes to BTHRSP
No light shroud yet. Being a triangular section tube, it'll probably need hoops. Someone from the audience asked about a shroud, and Dave said there isn't one yet.

Podunk Michigan? Yeah, that's me.
Seriously - I should be seeing him in a month. There's a group of folks that get together in the UP every now and again. Not a whole lotta dark in June up there, but still a whole lotta fun.
I hope he brings it, I'd dearly love to see it.

Sounds like you guys are having a great time. Surely do wish I was there. Thanks muchly for keepin us wage slaves updated!

Besides Dave Kriege unveiling the new Obsession, there were a few other speakers this afternoon. Leading off, we had Al Nagler. He spent a few minutes talking about TeleVue in general and some of the imaging scopes and accessories.

For some reason, he didn't pass it among the crowd to look at closely, dunno why. Here it is lying on the stage, though, best I could get.

Dave K is about 6' tall, maybe a bit more. My guess is that it's an 18" f/4.5 which is the stock size for his 18" dobs.
