Astronomik or SBIG
      #1329006 - 12/29/06 04:13 PM

What are te best filters to use with a ST10XME? The SBIG (custom scientific) LRGB filterset or Astronomik LRGB c2 filterset? I image at a lightpolluted site.

This is the transmission curve for the SBIG filters:

And this is the transmission curve for the Astronomik filters:

I was told that the gap between green and red of the SBIG filters was better to block lightpollution, but I'm not sure about the exposure rates. I want to get close to the 1:1:1 And yes, I like those realcolor deepblue images of galaxies.

I'm not that familiar with Astronomik filters, but looking at the charts I would guess they they would need more blue exposure than the SBIG filters. With the SBIG filters and an ST10MXE, you need twice the blue exposure as you do red, so I would expect you would need even more blue exposures with the Astronomik filters.

I originally used SBIG filters with my ST10MXE and had problems with light leaking past the filters with 2 sets and ended up switching to Astrodon E-series. The Astodon's also are much closer to 1:1:1 than the SBIG filters - close enough that I shoot RGB at 1:1:1 and make adjustments when I combine the RGBs.

I would also have to give Astrodon the nod, the I-series helps a great deal with red throughput, and I assume the E-series would do the same for blue on the st10.

Well, I would rather like the astrodon's of course. But I have now the opportunity to trade my astronomik's for SBIG's. So I have no additional costs.

The gap with the Sbig filters is where most light pollution would fall, so that makes sense. Not sure the wavelength of Sodium at 570nm, but still better then the astronomik's?
