M81, M82, NGC 3077 et al (reprocessed)

There’s been nothing but clouds and fog in Seattle for a very long time, so I’ve been re-examining some old data. One such set I revisited was of M81/M82 taken back on October 30th. In my original version, I had aggressively reduced the background to hide some unevenness. Some of you commented on it. Since then I’ve visited Steve Mandel’s Unexplored Nebula Project and discovered that the unevenness was at least partially due to some of the integrated flux nebula that I had picked up unbeknownst to me. It was barely there above the skyglow and part of it was actually obliterated by a gradient.

Here is the reprocessed version of M81, M82, and NGC 3077 with the background enhanced as best I could.

The background is still low so it may be hard to see. One telltale sign is a slightly darker “halo” around M81, where the density of the integrated flux nebula is lower than the surrounding area. The lower-left portion of this image suffered a gradient, so there is no detail there, but there are subtle fluctuations in background brightness in other areas.

Image details:

Takahashi Sky 90 at f/4.5
SBIG STL-4020M (self-guided)
Takahashi EM-200
Hutech LPS Filter
L:90, R:30, G:30, B:30 (5 minute subs)
Processed in Maxim/DL and Photoshop
Noel Carboni's Astronomy Tools Actions

I blended the background luminance into the blue channel at about 17% transparency, which is why the background is tinted blue.

Thanks for looking, and I welcome comments.

Cool Don!

I've gone back and looked at some of my images and they had the IFN and I had processed it out as well, apparently it isn't that tough to pick up.
