Scripting DSLR exposures new
      #1347551 - 01/08/07 02:25 AM

Is there some software avaialable (preferably free) that I can use to script a series of exposure sequences with my Canon Rebel 350 XT? Ideally the software will handle short and long exposures.

What do you mean by scripting? If all you want is set up for a series of shots, then there are a few which do that. If you mean also changing subject without human intervention, I don't know.

For the first, Guidemaster does both that and guiding. Also, Stark Labs do have a nice software to take several pictures.

In addition to the two Fabio mentioned, Steve Barkes who produces GuideDog also has DSLRControl which I use to automate sequences of exposures.

DSLR Focus at http://www.dslrfocus.com/ also does this. Has a focusing routine, and lets you save images directly from the cam to your PC with intelligent file names (obj name-iso-exposure length-exposure number.cr2). Worth the $30.

Looks like I need to be more specific. Say I want to write a script to capture 2 frames at 1/4000 and then 2 frame at 1/2000, and then 2 frames at 1/1000, etc All at the push of one button. Likewise, something that could take 2-1 minute exposures, 2-5 minutes exposures, etc.

I need to be able to change the capture time between shots, so I thought some type of scripting would be the way to go.

ImagesPlus can do that and I believe Craig Stark's DSLR Shutter program can as well (not sure though). IP can definitely do a series with variable exposure lengths and variable pauses between, etc.

DSLR Focus will do that as well.. different exposure lengths, apeture settings, ISO, delay interval between shots. Set it up, press start and forget it.

I have DSLRFocus. I guess I didn't look at it hard enough. It looks like it will do the trick.

Thanks for all your help.

Ok. Well in theory that would work if DSLRFocus didn't crash everytime I pushed the "Automate" Button on the short exposure tab.

DSLR shutter isn't flexible enough, I tried it.

I guess I'll have to try guidemaster and see if that works.

I never had problems with DSLR focus crashing when trying the scripted exposures... I did it successfully photographing the Orion nebula over the course of one night, and I programmed a series of 3 different exposure sets with 2 different ISO's.

Is your camera set to full manual mode (the dial on the top of the camera)?

It seems to work for the long exposure mode, but not for the short exposure tab. I'm interested in the short exposure tab at the moment. The camera is set to "T", but it doesn't work in "A" either.

Try running the camera in "M" mode instead of "T". That may be why DSLR Focus is barfing on you...

DSLRFocus complains that the camera is in "bulb mode" when I switch to the "short exposure" tab and the camera is in "M" mode. Will it still work?

Thanks for the advice.

Maybe you can use the long exposure mode but just enter the exposure times as fractions, such as .002 for 1/500 sec?
