Noisy flame and horsehead
      #1358164 - 01/13/07 01:51 AM Attachment (62 downloads)

my second image of the night... not quite what I was hoping for, but at least I got it.

As the night wore on, the transparency seems to have worsened considerably (rather common around here, unfortunately), and Alnitak disappeared behind a tree. I got only 5 subs of 7 minutes each, and a rather noisy result. I'll take it, though...

Regards
Duncan

thanks! This was taken through a 6" f/5 Newtonian, on an EQ-6 (Atlas GoTo) autoguided using a Pictor 216XT on a 80mm f/11 guidescope.

Duncan,
You have managed to resolve a fair amount with the lack of subs, but I imagine you had to stretch it a lot to get what you have.
I hope you don't mind but I ran it through Photoshop using some actions and some technical know-how I came up with this

Duncan, I've gotten pretty good photos of the flame and horse with exposure times similar to yours. And I've gotten worse ones with longer and more exposures. My guess is that the noise in your photo was light pollution, made worse by atomospheric conditions. I find on humid nights the LP fog on my exposures gets worse.

Peter,
thanks! What actions did you use for this?

Tom,
yes, I'm pretty sure that's right. The level of light pollution seems to be heavily dependent on the humidity, and around here that's a serious problem. I was hoping that the transparency might not be too bad last night, but the humidity picked up during the evening. I need a roadtrip to find some reasonable conditions I guess...

Looks pretty good for just 35 minutes with an unmodded 300D. When I did the HH last season with an unmodded DSLR, it took hours of exposure to get anything decent to come out.
