I took several images with my 4 inch refractor last weekend. This is of M51. 26 x 90 seconds with my unmodified Canon 10d. I should have use my CAT. Wow it is small. Next time I will use the big scope.

Don't need a bigger scope, just a longer one!

The longer FL would increase the magnification, correct? But wouldn't his 14" SCT provide better resolution of the object at the same mag than his 4" refractor?

The good thing is my Big Scope (Meade 14) is the long one. Here is a photo of M65 and friends. Also taken with the 4 inch. 26 x 90 seconds.

Nice images, yes a longer scope is what you need. The 4 inch can already pick up all of the light needed so no more inches are required, but a longer focal length would be nice.

Nice image. Nothing wrong with wide field shots. They have their place. In this case it gives a good perspective of M51. There is still quite a bit of signal that you can pull out of this image without clipping it. I played with it and got quite a bit more actually. Did not post it though as some take offence to that.
Again, nice shot.

Nice shots, and they really do illustrate how small most galaxies are -- even M33 is too small for my current setup (FL=384mm).

Has anyone been successful with EP projection of an object like M51? I'm sure focusing would give you fits but if you do not have a spare C12 hanging around......And that's a nice image wide field notwithstanding.

Thanks for the feedback. Please work on the images and let us see. I am still trying to sort out Photoshop with all of its options.

Thanks Dwight, I haven't had any imaging time in to speak of for quite a while so I'm a little bored. Anyway, for your image I used curves and a little sharpening in PS CS2. There is some amp glow on the right of the image which isn't to bad so I left it alone. Be sure to check out the processing tips and tutorials for PS in the sticky threads on this forum. A lot of good stuff there.
Cheers

The problem with increasing the focal length for a fixed apperture is the required exposure time increases meaning you need good tracking

This is really better than my shot of M51 from last weekend with a 300mm f/4.5 lens piggybacked. Light pollution was also a big problem, but it can be fighted to a degree at least. I was using ISO 1600 just because I already had darks for this ISO and corresponding temperature, and it was dam cold and I had to go to work next day, so I didn't switch to lower ISO. Heh, 120 seconds of exposure nearly completely washed out everything:

But thanks to processing, I still retained some detail. Conclusion: even piggyback can reveal a few galaxies

Great shot. I should try that with my 300mm lens and a medium format camera.
