Here I tried re-processing M82 leaving a black level of around 20 for R, G, B. Does seem to natural it out some.

Ok, thanks a lot for the good words and input folks.
Peter and Tonk, I really appreciate the background comments. I've been fighting that for months now. It's clear now and think I'll go out and tackle Alnitak one more time before the Moon steps in next week. Maybe NGC 2903 later tonight. I'll sure ask for help on Alnitak. That's a hard one to tame.

Great work on captures and processing Jerry. As mentioned and you have illustrated is that the black point adjustment can make or break subtleties in our images. It's tempting to up the darks for object contrast but the image begins to look less deep as a result.
