The darkened limb of the chromosphere in the photo is an artifact of the processing used to show both the prominences and the surface details -- you would not observe this in an eyepiece. Overall, I'd say the pic in the original post is similar to what one would see through a 2+" aperture filter: a 0.7 angstrom DayStar or a Coronado SM40 or 60. Going with a larger ERF'd DayStar or Coronado would give substantially better views. Double stacking Coronado's (see double stacking thread) or using a 0.5 angstrom DayStar would significantly enhance the surface detail of the chromosphere without affecting the prominence detail (though it does reduce scattered background light and results in somewhat improved visibility of prominences). -------------------- Bob diagonally parked in a parallel universe...
