I'm sorry to be posting about this camera when there's probably loads about it already here, but I can't find anything with the search function which, frankly, I can't seem to work very well.
I'm just checking, the Canon EOS 300D, or one of the "Rebel" variants, are ideal for deep space astroimaging? There seem to be a lot of different versions around on eBay - are there any I should avoid like the plague?

Without trying to go into the differences, the Canon Models 20D, 300D, and 350D seem to be widely used by Imagers so I would say these are safe.
As for the search function:
Make sure you indicate which forum you want to search in the drop-down list on the left side of the page. Select this forum from this list.
Select your keyword, 300D in your case.
I'd try the subject only option at first.
Leave the Username field empty.
Then Select New than 12 weeks for starters, more if you dont see the results you were looking for.
Hope this helps some.

Both will work just fine for starters. I would suggest you spend just a tad more and go for one of the Hutech mods.

If you can, try to skip the 10D / 300D generation. They have first generation sensors which are very noise compared to the second generation. 20D/350D/30D/400D all have a second generation sensor and will perform much better. That doesn't mean 10D or 300D are bad for astrophotography, but imho the saving is not big enough to tolerate the extra noise.

Hi Stormwatch! I have tried many Canon DSLR`s. One result is sure. The cameras vary VERY MUCH within the same model. I have a 10D which has less noise than my 350Xt and the 400XT. I even compared a 20Da side by side with two 10Ds- Made darkframes for five minutes at 27 Celsius. The 20Da was more noisy than the 10D`s. On them other hand i had 7 (seven)300D`s in my hand for testing. Only 1 was very good, 1 was acceptable 5 were unusable for astrowork!!! The 10D`s are much better in that way. So far from 5 (five) 10D`s i had to use only 1 was noisy. From the new cameras i would not recommend the 400Xti it shows the most noise.
Anyhow my recommandation is: Before you buy ANY DSLR no matter what model, test it with a 5 minute dark frame at room temperature. The bad cameras will show a lot of red and blue dots on the black image. The good ones only a few small ones ore none.

One big advantage of the 350D / XT over the 300D is the 350D has USB 2.0. This means Raw images take 2-3 seconds to download versus 30-40 seconds. Over the course of a night, that adds up to many additional exposure you can take.
Otherwise, both models (300D and 350D) are ideal DSLRs for astrophotography. The 300D is less expensive and you can use the difference in cost to have Hutech do the IR filter removal (the Hutech "mod"), which will make your camera 10x more sensitive to reds, which will allow you to image nebulae much faster.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm looking on eBay at them, although I'm going to wait till I've got used to the Toucam before I buy a DSLR camera.

Hi, would not recommend to buy a DSLR for astrophoto on Ebay, because as i mentioned already you can get a VERY noisy camera no matter what model you choose!!! In such a case you have an unusable DSLR and you buy very expensive!!!! You should check a DSLR before buying with making darkframes (!!!!) concerning noise. Buying a DSLR for astrophoto on Ebay is like putting your money on the roulette table.

Unfortunately, buying any DSLR for astrophotography will be a crapshoot, regardless of where one gets it; few, very few, sellers, will have evaluated the Canon for AP. Both of mine turned out to be pretty good; one I modified with the Baader UV/IR cut filter, the other is my snapshot camera.

I'll be buying within a month or two and was looking at the cheaper Canon DSLR's (Digital Rebel XT 8MP DSLR, is that the 300D?)
When you say test with a 5 minute dark frame, what is that, exactly ? Hold something dark over the lens while in bulb mode for 5 minutes then review on the LCD view finder and determine if many red/blue dots/pixels appear?

You got it!!!!! Maybe the lens cover in a dark room would be better. But you would want to view it on a PC monitor rather than the camera LCD.

Aha, hmm, that will make it difficult to "test it" at the store , I'll need to make sure I get it at a vendor with a good return policy ;-)
Thanks for the tips

The Digital Rebel XT 8MP DSLR is the 350D.
OK next question What is the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi 10.1 MP version ?
EDIT: I did some googling and found that the 10.1 MP{ version is the 400D.
so my question really is, if the vendor I am choosing has package deals on the 350D versus 400D, forget price for a second, are they about the same performance wise for AP ?

If you have a laptop, bring it with...
I tested mine, didn't even put a lens on it. Left the camera cap on. Just set to Bulb, set the image as RAW, used a remote, opened the shutter, walked away.. Came back 5 minutes later.
You'll see some dead pixels (or hot pixels) in every camera you test.. but you want to find one with the least amount. Also pay attention to the Amp Glow on the right side (for the XT 350D).

I believe there was some talk about the 350 being less noisier than the 400. You should check into that.
