My 120mm binoculars with 2" eyepieces exchange new
      #1456695 - 03/02/07 09:55 AM

Hi to everybody,
Ive own a large 120mm binoculars with 2 eyepieces exchange severl month ago,as far as I know, maybe its the first time that 2 eyepieces can be used in binoculars. And it was the first time that the Yunnan Optics factory sold this binoculars to me and other 10 Chinese binocular amateurs.Because it it a brand new products!
The product name was 30-50X120,45degree BT.As the name, this binoculars can exchange original 30X and 50X eyepieces, and its prism was 45 degree! The eyepieces size was special 37mm,neither 1.25 inch nor 2 inch,it that so strange? But it can suit for 1.25inch eyepieces by a unique conection coupe. It also can exchange 2 eyepieces, but you must rotate the 2 eyepieces from midlle, and rotate the half of the eyepieces to the prism of 120mm binos.I cant express it so accuratly,so you can see the pictures in my gallaries, maybe you can understand how can exchange that 2 eyepieces.
This binos are really HUGE!!!The body weight is 20 kilos,44 pounds! And the whole weight(including a wood tripod) is nearly 27 kilos,60 pounds!!!So it is hard for me to carry it out if only I find a car.

Then I ll say something about its optical.
I try 2,30mm,80degree AFOV eyepieces and other 1.25 ones such as the 20mm,70 degree AFOV eyepieces. The binoculars focal length is 720mm,so it can provide 24X for 2 ones and 36X for 1.25,70AFOV ones. But although the coating of the binos(inluding the lens.prisms and original eyepieces) was simply blue MC(it is the only and the most weekness of this binos),this eyepieces can provide me a super wide angle image. There is less color fulse in the center and the whole image is very bright!!! The large aperture lens provide the high brightness but not so many fulse color.Maybe because of the past two eyepieces was FMC. Compare with others eyepieces,I think the 2 30mm 80degreeAFOV eyepieces is the best one of daily use.
But at night,it is something different.
In my opinion the original eyepieces at 30X is the most suitable ones for this large binos at night. It has 72degreeAFOV,224FOV, a nice super wide angle eyepieces with good edge image(maybe accpetion by me) and very sharp center image! It about 75% the same sharp from center to edge, and about 10% is accpetion,10% is not so bad,the left 5% was fuzzy. Its better than the 2 ones(about 65% the same sharp from center to edge, and about 20% is accpetion,10% is not so bad,the left 5% was fuzzy.) And the original ones and the 2 ones both is very sharp ,the star in the center looks like needles!!!But for the 120mm,I think the 30X,4mm exit pupil is better than 24X,5mm exit pupil. My primary use is to watch the M objects and other deep sky objects,so I think 30X is a better choice for this binoculars.Althou it was blue MC.

Thank you for the fine report, Albert! I am impressed by your binoculars' optical quality. At 20 kilos, it is a lot of binocular!

Albert,

Thank you for these impressions. Never before have I found myself scheming for such an instrument, as I am now!

Albert,

Once again, thank you very much! Your reviews on these binoculars are wonderful! I very much want to purchase such an instrument, if they ever become available here in the US and are of good quality.

The coatings are a bit of a concern, but perhaps soon the manufacturer will provide fully multi-coated optics.

I don't know how much these binoculars might cost, but right now I am considering the purchase of a near-$3000 Celestron CPC 11" telescope. So I think that I could afford these binoculars (I would rather have a good set of large 45-degree-angle binos than a telescope).

Mike,
As I konw.maybe the new 120mm will be FMC
Because my friends and I wanted to get the binoculars quicklly so the Yunnan optics provide us the MC one.
It is a pity at all!!!

It is not unusual for the first models coming off the production line to be supplied with only coated lenses and prisms.

Could you supply a weblink to the factory website from where you purchased this binocular telescope?

Impressive collection! MCK has a very nice selection of unusual Carl Zeiss Jena binoculars, as well, I see. Thanks for posting photographs of your fine binoculars!
