The spaceweather webpage say there is a big sunspot coming from the far side, it will emerge july 13-17

and it is growing:

Prepare for solar activity!

Hi Andy,

That's a great full-disc shot. Colors are very close to the actual visual experience, which I prefer to many of the falsely colored yellow / orange pics I've seen. Balance between the chromosphere and prominences is also very realistic. Contrast seems to be close to that of a 0.7 angstrom filter.

Care to detail your processing techniques and equipment (exposure times, color channels and settings used, contrast and other detail enhancement settings, and/or editing/pasting of multiple images, etc.)?

I'm about to embark into digital photography using a Sony DSC-S50 2.1 megapixel with a Scoptronix adapter to the CEMAX. The majority of my processing will be done with PaintShop 7 Pro and any freeware I can download.

I note the pic states "SM 40/BF 10 (double stacked)." Are you using two SM 40's with a BF 10, an internal module, or something else? I'm using stacked SM90's with a BF 30 and a C102/1000 (see double stacking thread).

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if this big sunspot is an incarnation of AR0635? It disappeared around the Sun's limb about two weeks ago and would be due to reappear if it still exists.

Wonderful image, Andy!

Probably they are the same, the last june 22 I got this image from them, it is sunspot group 0635 and a M-class flare

Hi Bob,

I am using 2 SM40.

The image processing is very simple:
- a small gaussian blur (~0.8 Pixel)
- an unsharp mask of about 200% and 2,5 Pixel radius
For both of the two images (disc & limb)
Paint Shop should have the same functions.

It is important, that you use the highest _real_ resolution of your camera (no interpolation). Zoom is ok, but don't use the digital zoom. Then there is room enough to scale the image, as much as you need, to get a sharp one without a lot of noise.

Stacked units need much more exposure time. I use 1/4s @ ISO 400 for the disc and 1/8s @ ISO 100 for the limb.
I don't change the colors.

This setting works with my Nikon Coolpix 995 - I don't know your camera, and if this settings will work. But the best thing to find it out is trying!

Cheers,
Andy
