So instead, I bought a pair of 19mm Panoptics... new
      #1474405 - 03/11/07 12:06 AM

What ever this is has to stop - this disease I will call inflamitus eyepiecespendalotus I recently posted that I was looking for a 15mm-17mm pair of eps for my Denk IIs. Then, half-way through the thread I changed my mind (based on some suggestions here) and decided I would go with a 24-27mm ep pair. I already just bought a pair of Antares 19mm W70 so I was set there...

Well, I thought I was until I saw a pair of 19mm Panoptics for sale on another site. Got the boss' (wife's:-) permission and bought them. I received them today and they were well packaged and are in excellent condition. I tried them tonight with the Denk IIs...Wow...so this is what it is like to have a sweet pair of eyepieces for your bino. Looked at a few Messier objects along with Saturn and the view through the Pans were very crisp and immersive. I did compare them to the Antares and the difference was obvious - the Pans were head and shoulders more comfortable to look through and had a much crisper/cleaner view. As far as build quality, I would also give that to the Pans by a wide margin. Don't get me wrong, the Antares were not bad at all, I just thought the Pans were better in every respect, but mostly the viewing comfort. But, please understand that I paid $320 more for the Pans so I may be a tad bias and in some way trying to justify the price difference Seriously though, I am very happy with the Pans and anticipate owning them for a long time.

And because of the aforementioned disease, I am now trying to move the w70s that I have no need for because I still "need" the 24-27mm

Clear skies all,

Mike

I totally agree with everything you said about the 19 pans. I've used several EP pairs in my BV's and by far they are the best.

Mike, the 19 Pans are my favourite as well. Have you considered a Denk dual arm power switch? With it you may not feel the need for the 24's, and it is sooo conveinient to just slide the lever instead of changing eps.

Hey- no harm, no foul there... unless, of course, one were trying to pass them at Panoptic prices and as Panoptic values! There IS a difference.

Long live that difference!

Congrats on landing on them Pans! Nice catch

Thanks, I do feel good about landing these eps

And as mentioned by Pat, my Denk S2 diagonal IS with the power switch - I need to better analyze my needs before deciding what eps I really need - maybe 32mm Televues or Antares Elites - once the W70's are sold of course

Mike, one question...
I own a 24mm Pan and it is very useful in general observations, but I really don't like a feature : are a soccer ball and a football ball different ? I think they are really different.
The first is perfectly round an the second oval.
Well, looking at the Moon with Pan 24mm I can see it round only on axis, moving off axis it's like an egg.
Using Antares 19mm/70° I can place the Moon (but also a planet or a star field) on the edge of the field without geometrical distortion.
This is the reason for I will never sell my Antares.
What do you think about it ?

Clear skies !

Alessandro

P.S. : maybe Panoptic 19mm is very different from the 24mm ? My experience with Televue wide field eyepieces is always the same (Panoptic or Naglers) : eggs off axis.
P.S.II : I love Televue eyepieces expecially when coupled with my Dobsonian telescope.

Since you have the powerswitch diagonal you can go up or down from the Pan 19 via the powerswitch so do you really need a 32mm? I own the Denk 21s now and plan on getting the 14s pretty soon. Using Russ's philosophy your next set might be Pan 15s or even the Denk 14s so that you can go up or down from that point. With those two sets of eyepieces, you should have a pretty good total range of viewing options.

Alessandro, I will try the Pans this weekend on the moon and see if I get anything like you described with your 24mm. I did notice that on edge the Pans appeared much sharper than the Antares on individual stars and open clusters. I will try to be a little more descriptive when I do because the 2 sets of eyepieces really gave, in my mind, a different view in the binos from each other - it seemed very noticable.

Thanks and clear skies,

Mike

Hi Warf,

One day 60+ degrees, the next 30 or less - great to live in Wisconsin, isn't it

Yeah, I probably will look at the Pan 15s or Denk 14s at some point but I will have to wait until at least the fall when I can cajole my lovely wife into letting me spend a little from my teaching side job That will be another post on this site asking "which one is better?"

As far as needing 30mm+, not sure how much I need them but I do have a line on some Ultima 30's that I may jump on tomorrow - even with the power switch, I'm thinking I can get a diffent feel from the Ultimas than the Pans in lower power mode.

Thanks and clear skies,

Mike

I also use the 19Pans with a S2 Dielectric diagaonl.
Another pair I have are 13T6s. I have a pair of 15mm TV Plossls for planets and the Moon. I have not been shopping for bino EPs for over a year now, these work just great.

The upside to the weather here is that you don't take a good night of observing for granted. When I pull the trigger on the Denk 14s in the next couple of weeks I will have a pair of Celestron Axiom 15s available... just food for thought for you Mike. These have been very good eyepiecies, just what you would expect from a Axioms. I like the Denks batwing design, and for me, the Denks are just more comfortable than other eyepieces I have used. The Axioms have served me well.

Warf,

You are killing me...There is NO way I can afford any more eps. In the last month and a half, I bought a pair of 19mm Pans, a pair of 12.5 orthos, a second Televue 11mm and I am expecting 2 Ultima 30mm eps to be delivered within the week. Plus I bought a pair of 19mm w70s (which I just sold at a loss to help pay for the Ultimas). And to top it off, I also sold my 1 Axiom 15mm ep a couple of weeks ago. So, forget it, not interested...nope, no way, not at all.

So anyway, send me a pm when you have the 15's available, because if I have any kind of reserves around, I definitely will be interested Whether I have the funds - well, I will have to start saving my pennies now

I tell you, with all my spending it's a good thing my wife thinks I'm worth keeping around - must be my charm and winning smile - it certainly cannot be because of my high degree of fiscal responsibility

Thanks and clear skies,

Mike

Pardon the correction Mike. The correct term would be inflammitis eyepiecespendalotosis the suffix "osis" meaning affected with as opposed to "itis" which would be inflammed (though this might be correct, especially in your case!).

The outlook is grave. Spare no expense. A cure could happen any day now. We in the field are hopeful of a cure. Poor man...

Donations should be sent (please, in Mike's name) to the Nagler Institute.

I will let you know when I get the Denks and when the 15s come available, I'll make you an offer you can't refuse ... So where do you do most of your observing? You should come over our way sometime (janesville, wi )... we have a couple of club members who commute in from Elkhorn just so that they can get some darker skies. We are checking out some areas close to where I live (Ft. Atkinson / Lake Koshkonong area) so that there commutes are not quite so long.

Hi Warf,

It's not me that can refuse your offer - but my wife Seriously though, just let me know and by hook or crook...

I am probably about 50-60 miles from you in the town of Mukwonago (right off of I43) and would love to join you sometime for some dark sky viewing. I have a feeling I could learn a lot from viewing with others - otherwise I am a fairly indifferent observer. Currently I observe right outside my garage - it's fairly dark here and I have a pretty good sized lot (1.3 acres). I do have a neighbor on a 5 acre lot with a bright light on a pole on one side of the house (the garage side)but during the spring and summer I have a pretty thick layer of trees that separate us and blocks out the light. PM me sometime and we can try to set something up this Spring.

Thanks and clear skies,

Mike
