Viking, You have what's most needed to get good pictures-persistance.
Let us know what equipment you have and how you are using it and perhaps we can help.
Off hand it looks like you may be trying to hand hold that camera (no tripod)?

This guy woke me up early in the morning and wouldn't let me sleep so I took his picture. It was backlit and low light so it was a tough one to get.

They are fussy. Try some high quality jam with a lot of solid pulp still floating around in it like a good quality orange marmalade with the rinds still in it. Not the thin watery stuff most markets sell.
Remember they are neotropical and spend half of their life feasting on only the most choice fruits and nectar that the rainforests of Central and South America provides. They are aristocrats of the bird world and expect only the most natural foods.
Give them what is close to their natural food in the wild and they will come.

Thought I'd just throw this in for a change of pace.
This was done by the artist that has illustrated my Wife's books. Amazing how much detail and it's only in black and white using a pen and ink.
This is copyrighted but I have the Artist's permission to post it as a low resolution thumbnail so enjoy. The original file is a gigantic uncompressed 28mb TIFF file setup to print at 2400 dpi.

My feeble attempt at capturing a hummer. Not as nice as Dave's hummers but there you are.
I have a fast short 300mm FL lens and when I have time will try Dave's method of getting very close and using a remote. Otherwise I have to use high ISOs and things get too grainy.
