Anybody use one of these with their HDTV? I'd be curious as to what you think of it as compared to 480p.
I'm about to order a Zenith DVB-318, my HD setup is completely component video based, and this is the first player I have been able to find that scales to 1080i on the component video outputs.
Right now, I feed the set 480i via component video and let the TV perform the Progressive scan as it seems to be the only way I can get a good anamorphic squeeze out of my TV on anamorphic widescreen DVD's.
Having a large 4:3 set, I find it locks into full 4:3 mode when fed 480p, which keeps it from getting any anamorphic squeeze benefits. The set has a native widescreen mode, but only for 1080i sources, so at least for my widescreen movies this should be much better being able to set the player for a widescreen TV, rather than a 4:3 aspect display.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and comments.....

Well I ordered one... $160 found on best deal...
Cheap enough to give it a shot. The more reports I find on the player, the more it seems perfect for those that have setups similar to mine.
lol Even though nobody responded, I will post back my experiences with it. Heck if nothing else it will up my post count here. :-)

I recently bought a 55" Mitsubishi HDTV (don't recall the model right now) with standard tuners (PIP included) and a connection port for 1080i that looks like a relative of a PC Serial port or some such thing. My DVD player is connected via component video with Optical cable for sound. I am itching to get a 1080i signal from something... DirecTv (I have the old technology DirevTv) or DVD. I am assuming I can connect both somehow (one thru the other?) to the single port on the TV. Does the DVD disc itself need to be a specially encoded one to generate the extra resolution?

Hmm, model number of your 55" Mitsu? You should have basic component video inputs for 1080i right? Three color coded rca type plugs?
My HDTV only has one set of HDTV inputs, but I have a very high quality Denon 7.1 Reciever that can switch up to three such sources.
With the model number of you Mitsu, I can tell you how it will all hook up. You really owe it to yourself to view some real HDTV though.
What these players do, is take any DVD scale it to 480p first then scale it to 1080i. They say it is close to HDTV but of course since the source isn't hdtv, it can never really be as good.
If it is a newer Mitsu, it should have both DVI / HDMI and component video inputs for HD sources.

I'll have to look when I get home tonight for model number etc. It should be a relatively new model as we only bought it about 2 months ago. I know I have component inputs for 480p because the DVD is currently jacked into those. Not sure on the 1080i if it has component jacks or only the 'computer' plug (forget how many pins) looking connection. I almost want to say it had some proprietary name for the 1080i connection, but I'm not sure. I did see it in the store with a digital signal (1080i) running in a loop with a nature program... elk in fall foilage, etc. It was some impressive TV picture! Even just using the normal signals from DirecTv, DVD etc it looks really good. I'll try to post something on the details later tonight or in the morning.

It's a WS55315. The computer plug looking connections are for a proprietary device called: MonitorLink/DVI. The manual says: "MonitorLink/DVI input uses a DVI-I Dual Link connector for maximum cable flexibility. When MonitorLink is used as a DVI-HDCP input, the terminal is compliant with DVI-D Single Link signals matching EIA-861 standards for standard, extended, and high definition video with scanning rates of 480p and 1080i. However, this input is not intended for use with personal computers or devices outputting video signals with computer resolutions. All other DTV video signals, such as 720p, need to be converted by the DTV receiver (or compatible device) to one of the compatible signal types."
2 cables are used: the MonitorLink/DVI cable from TV back panel to Mitsubishi HD Receiver/Controller back panel. And the MonitorLink Control/RS232 cable from TV back panel to Mitsubishi HD Receiver/Controller back panel. Audio is connected separately with RCA plugs.
Other connections: Inputs 1 & 2 for (VCR etc) with S-video or RCA type jacks Components 1 & 2 (480i/480p/1080i) RCA type jacks DTV (YPbPr/RGBHV) 480i/480p/1080i (what is RGB + HV? I assume the HV is High Video signal, but why would that be in addition to Red-Green-Blue? Or is it in addition?)

OK...
For HDTV and/or a DVD player that scales to 1080i....
You will be able to use either of your component video inputs, these inputs are analog, you can also use that other connector called DVI. (Or whatever they are calling it, that is what it is)
That other connector, is indeed DVI and/or HDMI.... This connection keeps the signal digital until the actual display stage where because it is a CRT rear projection TV it must finally be converted to analog for the CRT's. If you have Plasma, LCD, DLP, or any other true fixed pixle display, the signal never goes analog, and direct pixle / bit mapping is used.

By the way, I did get this player...
And if you have CRT based HDTV, and it allows 1080i through component video, GET THIS PLAYER!!!
You will be amazed at just how close to HDTV this thing is.....
