Did you get to dance with Marcus?

No, didn't get a chance to do that, but I could have sworn I saw him dancing in the courtyard singing In the Navy.
"Come on people, and make a stand. In the navy, in the navy, in the navy!"

Mike, I'm sorry I missed you. I was outside with the solar stuff most of the weekend. We cleared out early on Saturday because of the clouds (after 1300) and then on Sunday we had initially set up in the foyer but then made our way outside. I was in and out with the solar party that day so that I could spend some time talking to Gary Palmer (amazing imager www.meade4m.com/advisors/g_palmer ), Gary and Tom, and hitting up some info from some of the vendors with John.
I got to meet Alan Friedman, www.avertedimagination.com and spend some time talking about sketching with him. He's another amazing imager but also a sketcher (well in his case, he's a fine artist whereas I'm a doodler ) as found here with his day job www.greatarrow.com/designers.asp
I finally got to meet Greg K and his kids as well. His daughter plays violin so we had something in common. Greg was in Ohio awhile back on business and I missed the opportunity to meet him then. So it was great not to miss him this time around. That's Greg on the left and Sol Robbins on the right. Sol's son is another musician and is well on his way to fame in jazz. Talk about two proud fathers!

Alan, I saw you in passing but didn't get a chance to introduce myself when we were with the Horstman's. I swear, you are the spitting image of our Mark Mickols here on CN. I thought he had made his way to NY from CA and was going to surprise us by just showing up!
Barlow Bob was a warm hearted terrific guy, welcoming me as if I was part of the club. And Ralph was the same. Ralph and I spend a lot of time together in the solar forum so it was like meeting up with an old friend, or moreso, a long lost brother. It's funny how when you speak to people so long on a forum that when you finally meet up in person, you are instantly at ease. I thought for sure I had photos of the both of them, but evidently I missed getting them on "film".
Barlow Bob invited me to join in on the solar party dinner Saturday night and I had a great time. They even had a few bottles of wine with a famous solar prom on the label. Chardonnay, my favorite!
That's Greg Piepol, his son (and I can't remember his name either but he was just as nice and easy to talk to as Greg), and sitting on either side of me are Lucian Sadowski and his daughter (who's name also escapes me. I think it is Michelle, but could be mistaking that with his wife's name). I love seeing the kids getting involved in astronomy and she was a joy to talk to as well as Lucian. If I remember rightly, Lucian's wife is a solar observer but was unable to make it this weekend. Lucian is an imager and I've had the pleasure to see a few of his Mars images with hopefully more to come as he has time to share them with me.

Tom (Guner), I'm very sorry I had to miss lunch with you and John. But it was wonderful to meet you in person. I hope you enjoy the PST Cal K that you got from John and can't wait to hear how you like the new Meade eyepieces! Wow, some of those were huge!!!! I wonder if you'd be able to use them like binoviewers....they were so wide it seemed I could fit my whole face in them. You lucky guy.
This is Joe and Janice Donahue. They are standing next to a homemade solar system that sports a 2002 Stellafane Convention sticker. www.stellafane.com What a great project.
It is a Televue 85 F/7 APO on a Vixen GP equatorial with a solar spectrum of .2 Angstroms. They got the filter in 2001 and a year later the project was finished.

The iris on the objective came from a medical surplus dealer off a fluoroscopy machine. This is how aperture is controlled. It's very useful for changing between limb and surface detail observations.

I certainly will, Alan. I'm hoping to come back next year with my husband. This was my first NEAF event and I was very impressed. I just wish there were more hours in the day so I would have enough time to see everything and meet all the people I wanted to meet.
Here's a link to a photo of Mark. He's next to his homemade scope and is a machinist as well as a great guy. Mark Mickels

Here's Joe and Janice's dual axis tilter on the scope. It's controlled by a camera shutter cable, which enables you to stay on a band and then quickly change over to a different band if desired. Joe has made a few other tilter boxes for Mark Wagner for Solar Spectrum.

And here is the spectrum itself. I was very impressed with the views, but have to say what knocked my socks off was the detail of the sunspot itself within the active region. I've not seen that kind of definition with my scope which has a <.5A filter system. I've only seen that kind of detail with some of the images of the sun. It was wonderful to see it visually.
Thanks for taking the time to explain your set up and for the great views, Joe and Janice!
The only other scope I was able to look through was Ralph's 70mm Cal K. The plage and sunspot stuck out like a sore thumb and I was even able to see mottling. It was a great view compared to visually observing through the PST Cal K that I had looked through in the past. I'm trying to remember the eyepiece Ralph had in it. The Cemax eyepieces work very well with that bandwidth. I still prefer my TV Plossl with the H-alpha line, but you have to appreciate the Cemax for the Cal K. Thanks Ralph!

I wish I had recorded so much more at this event. I met a very nice gentleman that came all the way from Norway. This was his 4th or 5th NEAF event. And of course, there's Jane from Australia with Sirius Observatories. I finally got to meet Paul Hyndman, the self proclaimed Astro Nut and yet another amazing imager! www.astro-nut.com Paul, thanks for all your help, and thank you very much for letting me use your battery on Sunday so I wouldn't have to walk all the way back down to the truck to get mine.
And of course, it was wonderful to meet up with my old friends from Sky Tour group (well, a bunch of CNer's that met up at Sky Tour and have become great friends since). Even though we all meet up a few times a year, I still miss them terribly when we have to part ways. And I got to talk to Ron Boe on the phone!

Just flew in last night. I'm just bummed I didn't take a picture of Peter Ceravolo and his wonderful wife. I was cracking up because this guy is a legend in optics and he looked like a young Columbian drug lord to me This is a picture of Alan Traino and Howie Glatter. Alan is the best and has the energy it takes to run a great show. I just love the guy, he's a big ball of energy. Howie is great too. Thanks for the new barlowed laser tip Howie!
