Balloon pump for corrector plate dust
      #1635253 - 05/31/07 05:46 AM

I was reading the 'How To Clean Telescope Optics' thread and wound up on the company seven site, where they recommend the use of rubber bulbs to blast dust off the plate.

I had another idea for a very cheap air blaster - a simple ballon pump. These cost very little and give a pretty good blast of air. My son is balloon mad so I have several of these in various sizes floating round the house.

The kind of thing I mean is like this:

Balloon Pump

Anyone else tried these?

Cheers,

Dave

While that looks like it might do the job of blowing dust away, I would be concerned about what kind of materials are used inside the thing to lubricate the piston.

The squeeze bulbs that are intended for optics are pretty simple and not very expensive. I am not sure I would point something at my corrector plate when I am not certain about what might be coming out of it.

Hi Dave,...looks to me to be a good idea,... the concern expressed by mmagrunmo is possibly un-founded as no lube is used in these devices. I would make an air/dust filter to be placed inside tube ( in similar way to home made 'cat coolers')for peace of mind.

Thanks. As far as I know it simply has a one-way valve that stops you sucking air out the balloon when you pull the handle back. It's one of those flappy material valves that shuts down when you pull backwards. Caution always good I guess though. If I can find a squeeze bulb I will get one - there are a few large dust specks on the plate when it arrived - but so far I haven't been able to find anything local.

Dave

I would try it several times on a regular windows glass before blowing on plate corrector.
