I took this image last summer and tried processing it and found it had to much noise to make it presentable. So I shelved it and figured I'd wait for this summer and add some more time to it. Anyway, I thought I'd take another look at it and discovered via the Canon file viewer that the 20 darks that I took after imaging it had different time durations. Curious!, every light frame was exactly 360 seconds long while I had 10 dark frames at 360 seconds and 10 darks at 400 second duration. The odd thing is that each 400 second dark was after a 360 second dark. I used IP to take the darks just as the lights so I don't know why the two different time durations. Upon finding this problem I just processed it and omitted the 400 second darks and the noise was gone.

Larger image here.

Telescope: FS102 @ F/8
Camera: Canon (unmodified) 10D
29 x 6 minute exposures @ ISO800

Thanks for looking.

Dave,

I bet you were glad to save this image. It is a very impressive capture!

Great job processing without the darks. Doesn't look noisy at all, IMO.

Glad you figured that out Dave! It would have been a shame to lose that one. Very nice red response for a stock 10D.

Wow! thanks everyone. I really appreciate your kind words.

I'm looking forward to getting some more time on this one this summer. Truth be known though, I really do want to image this with a modified camera. However, I'll need to modify my income first.

WOW... very nice and sharp. Lots of colours in the stars and I like the effect with the diffraction spikes.
Thanks for sharing!

An UNmodified 10D?? You have really tempted me to try this with my UNmodded 300D. Great stuff - you've gone pretty deep and captured loads of detail too!

Beautiful Dave, especially for an unmodded camera. I like you star colors and the spikes. I have this on my list for the summer. Thanks for the preview.
