Another shot from the same spot as my first photos, this is at 4.75 x zoom, of the area to the right of the middle on the wide angle photo. The end of the main Lofoten chain can be seen in the background. The distance should be about 90km or thereabout.

I'm a romantic.
I looked at your last picture and I could just imagine your ancestors setting out in their long boats for the Irish Sea. Nothing like a pleasant summer of rape and pillage along the coast of Kenny's beloved Lancaster. Ah for the good old days.
I would imagine at that latitude there is not much more to do than fishing and forestry with, perhaps, a side line of herding?
Also I noticed there is some snow pack at the higher elevations. Are there any signs of global warming up there?

I love those photos,Ducky. {I feel a bit akward calling you,Ducky}
Norway eh! The Geordies and the Norweigens are good friends, we used to burn eacxh others churches down in centuries past.
The Vikings used to come over to the North East for a bit of rape and pillage. Then the Geordies had a whip round and hired a boat for the return match.
Good mates now, the Vikings and the Geordies.
Please post some more,Ducky.
Mr Onions.
P.S. Shut that door!

Swedpat: You should do that, remember to tell me so we can meet up.
Sparrow: That's not not impossible, allthough those who came to England probably started a bit more south. There are some Viking lefovers in Steigen where those pictures where taken. The traditional way of life was farming and fishing, thats the way I grew up, a small farm, and then fishing on the side. Farming and fishing is still important, allthough with large boats and larger farms, forestry mostly for firewood. Then there is tourism, and various support functions and some mining and recently oil and gas extraction out at sea.
As for global warming, yes, there are signs. The snow is dissapearing more and more (in the winter) from the south of Norway, up here its still not a problem. The sea temperature is also rising making some fish stocks move furter north. The biggest changes are further north though, around the svalbard islands where new temprarture records are set frequently, and ice packs around the islands are dissapearing.
Mr Onions: Im not sure what Geordies are? Local Englishmen? I assure you we are very peasfull these days bw.
Regards
Jostein

Wow, great shots all! Very nice views. If I'm not mistaken, Sparrow, target 2 is along the trail winding past several bluff-top Native American "effigy mounds" in Wyalusing (a nice Wisconsin state park). And I can assure Kenny it's a nice place to visit, especially in autumn.

Jostein's and these photos take the edge off of summer down here (111F heat indices or the bottomside of overcast; it's either one or the other here near the wrong end of the river).
I don't have Ducky's gigantic vistas but perhaps another scale is in order...
...Perhaps this will cool you down.
Taken from back porch in early morning after heavy rains. Temp 62F. Sun just starting to penetrate the forest canopy and burn off the fog and dew. Back deep in the woods I could hear the Wood Thrush welcoming the new day.
This and strong coffee is all anyone has a right to ask for.

Ducky Ducky Ducky. What do you mean? Millions of Vikings come to Geordieland every year for the cheap goods.
Geordieland being,Tyneside.
The Ferries arrive daily from Scandanavia to the port of Tyne.
Great Pics.

You people talk roamticly about the Viking age, but you forget that they had to eat picked herring. My grandfather would spend days in the basement cooking that stuff. And you were not a true member of the family if you did not eat some. It made me sick as a dog. I still eat hardtack and cheese at night before going to bed.

Vikingcraftsman,
Herring is good and healthy food, it contains omega-3. If you eat herring 3 days a week you don't need to take omega-3 pills, I have read...
