Celestron Silvertop [Vixen]
      #1741742 - 07/27/07 03:03 AM

In the early 90s I purchased a Celestron SPC102. It came with a Celestron 26mm Siver top Plossl. It was a great eyepiece. I beleive that it was actually manufactured by Vixen of Japan. I sold the eyepiece with the scope , and had always regretted it.
Last year I picked up another 26 mm Celestron [vixen] Silvertop in like new condition. It performs as nicely as I remember it. Very sharp and great edge of field performance. I would like to know if the other focal lengths of this eyepiece perform as well as the 26 mm?
Does anyone else like this old forgotton gem?
Are the new Celestron Silvertops as good as these earlier models?

I also owned a 1990's Celestron/Vixen silvertop in my SPC-102F.

I loved these eyepieces and am aware at least a few other sizes existed. Sadly I have not ran across any other the the mid 20mm models.

But If I remember correctly, these great performers are out there.

As to the new silvertops I can not speak for. I have not seen their performance upclose and familiar.

I will say the new Vixen Plossls are also great performers. That is the main reason I tried to purchase the entire collection(I am missing 2(9mm and 32mm)).They are close to the performance of the original Celestron/Vixen 1990 silvertops.

This eyepiece came with my new C80ED refractor and delivers
much better performance than the 25mm Omni plossl. I use
it every time no matter which scope goes outside.

It also has better eyerelief than the Omni,Todd. With my
glasses on,I can take in the entire FOV by a freckle, some
thing I couldn't do with the 25mm Omni.

That's the EP's I'm looking for!!! I had the 25mm or 26mm with my Nexstar 8!! I let it go because I was receiving my new scope with an Elux 25mm. I wish I had held on to this EP!!! Now I'm after the 15mm, 20mm, and 25mm and not having any luck.

I also own the Antares Japanese Plossl set, They are probably made in the same Japanese factory as the Vixen eyepieces. Very nice eyepieces!
But I think the more recent Celestron Silvertops are made in China or Tiawan, although I could be wrong.
The old Celestron/Vixen Silvertops also came in 20mm/ 17mm and 10mm. There maybe other sizes, but these are the focal lengths that I have seen for sale on the used market.
The 26mm is a fantastic eyepiece, and I just wanted to know if the other sizes mesure up to the 26mm?

Here's my small Silvertop collection: 26mm, 2X barlow, 45mm.

The 26mm and the barlow are nice, the 45mm is a dog (bad blackout, narrow FOV)...

I just found the 25mm like Kenny's near brand new for 18 bucks shipped out of New York. It's not quite the same as the other I had 3 years ago but very close. Mine said Nexstar on it. I also located the 20mm that looks like this 25mm EP as well but they want 50 bucks for it. It's brand new in a box. I'm not sure to go with it or the used TV plossl they are about the same price.

This 45mm looks as if it has been in a few accidents. Mine is in mint condition and i have been offered a pretty penny for it. However i will never sell it. I used it in my old C-90 yielding an unbelievable 22X. I could fit all of the Pleiades into the view. It is great for low power views such as this. However if you do get off of the optical axis you will experience blackouts.

It's hit the ground more than once. It's a tough little EP, I'll give it that. But used on a C8, trying to keep your head in exactly the right position to avoid blackout gets irritating.

For wide-field viewing, a 30mm 1 RPD smokes it.

Steve,
I have the vintage Celestron 17mm and 26mm silvertop circle-v Plossls. They are two of my favorite eyepieces. The 17mm is as good as the 26mm, and both of them are wunderbar.
Good seeing,

It's nice your getting on the TV plossl kick,Ace. These are
wonderful eyepieces that don't cost an arm and a leg. They
will give that 5 element orange collection of yours a real
run for the money. With either the Ultimas or the TV's,you
can't lose. Been there,done that.

These Celestron "silver top" (with a black rim around the top) (identical to Kenny's silver 25mm pictured above) have been standard fare Chinese plossls that came stock issue with Celestron products for years. These are not really special eyepieces. I say this because I just this weekend answered ace's wanted ad looking for some of these eyepieces. This may kill a sale, but I'm wondering why would someone want to build out a set of these? See this review Comparison of Seven Moderate Priced 16-20mm Eyepieces which includes this Celestron silver top 20mm.

No disrespect is meant in this reply at all EDZ. I look to you for many answers and your great opinions and knowledge.

I think each observer and set of eyes respond to different eyepieces differently.

There is also Brand Loyalty to consider. In automobiles as well as Astronomy accessories and scopes brand loyalty can often over rule performance differences.

Perhaps one of the reasons in this case may be the industrial silver finish and long term availability of these Celestron/Vixen eyepieces.

Again EDZ I mean NO dis-respect but mearly wish to offer an explanation as to why some seek these eyepieces.

I had one of the Silvertops with the red stamping and circle "v" on the barrell and it was axially almost as good as my 16mm. Nagler T2. It was the first 1.25" EP I ever owned.

I agree with Ed as these eyepieces aren't really anything
special optically. The couple I've owned have been nice,
decent,useable Chinese plossls.

It's my guess only that because they say Celestron on them,
Ace will stop at nothing to collect them all. Kind of like

Hi Steve,

It just so happens I have the entire classic Celestron (Vixen) Silvertop 1.25" plossl set: 45mm, 36mm, 30mm, 26mm, 22mm, 17mm, 15mm, 10mm, 7.5mm, and 1.25 barlow. I love these eyepieces in my Edmund 6" f/6, and CPC 9.25 SCT; they are very sharp, and I think they are quite similar to orthos with high light through put, and high contrast. There only weak point (if they have one) is that they don't have modern coatings. Great eyepieces. My Particular favorites are the 30mm, 22mm, 17mm, and 15mm. Note: The Celestron Silvertop 30mm eyepiece has a Taiwan stamp, but as far as I know were made near the same time as the other Vixen Silvertops. A very nice eyepiece, but rare. I also have fondness for the Celestron (Vixen) 20mm & 16mm erfles, and the Celestron (Vixen) 2" 40mm Ortho. I personally really like the vintage Celestron eyepieces. Steve, I hope this helps.

I am not Ed and am not speaking for him but maybe I can add some to this thread.

The Celestron/Vixen plossls were discontinued in the mid 90's when Celestron switched to the Synta brand imports. The one pictured in this thread by KWB is from Synta. I can not comment on it's performance as I have never looked through this particular eyepiece. The newer Vixen plossls that Talastrone talked about above are made by one of the chinese manufactures as well. Again, I have not used any of these myself.

The Celestron/Vixen series were offered in the following focal lengths:
45mm, 36mm, 30mm, 26mm, 22mm, 17mm, 15mm, 10mm, 7.5mm, 5mm as well as the matching 2x barlow as seen in one of the pics above. The Vixen made Celestron plossls will always have orange and/or red lettering. The later models had red lettering with a black ring around the eyelense. The earlier models had no ring and had orange lettering. The 26mm was the standard eyepiece with the SP series and GP series of telescopes (which were all made by Vixen except for the SCT's and the 90mm Mak). The Cometron series scopes also made by Vixen included Vixen made Kellners (as did all of the other Celestron scopes at that time that didn't come with the plossl). My particular favorites out of the "silvertop" series made by Vixen are the 30mm, 22mm and the 17mm. There performance (IMHO) is just a hair below the TV Plossls and worth seeking out. The Celestron/Vixen made "silvertops" all have a "circle V" emblem on them and still pop up quite a bit used on the usual sites. Vixen branded ones can also be found from time to time.

Hope this helps...
Jason

Joe,
I too like the older Celestron/Vixen eyepieces. The 30mm I owned had the "circle v" followed by Japan on it. I did not know any came from Taiwan.

BTW, I have a Vixen branded 2" 40mm Ortho too and really like it. It works really well for public observing at our club's observatory with the 16" SCT.

Steve:

Agreed! The old Vixen sourced 26 MM Plossl is a wonderful eyepiece and a real steal. I used to be part owner of a small shop back in the mid 80's called Astronomy New England. We bought & sold countless scopes. This gave us access to and experience with a huge range of equipment and some of it was extraordinary stuff.

The 26mm vixen Plossl was a "standard issue" eyepiece with just about any Celestron sold. We had a couple of dozen of them sitting around as we would remove them from trade ins and put them into stock. I didn't pay much attention to them (in fact I never even looked thru one)until one night when I needed a decent low power eyepiece for a public star party we were offering.

To check it out I stuffed it into my AP 7" F15 APO. "What The..!". It had a nice wide field, great eye relief and was very sharp. Next I stuck it into an excellent 8" F7 Cave and got the same story. Then I did the unthinkable and compared it to my Clave 25 MM. I really could not tell much of a difference. I was impressed to say the least and that eyepiece promptly went into my eyepiece box where it (and the Claves)has stayed for the last 20+ years. In fact, I just picked up another one for my Denk II and they are right up there with my TV 32s.....and if the truth be known, I use them a lot more than the TVs.

Hi Jason,

I actually have two of the 30mm vintage Celestron (stamped Taiwan)eyepieces, and to tell you the truth I actually had a 30mm stamped with Vixen years ago, but it was in terrible shape, and I sold it. I finally ended up with these in the last two years. Very nice eyepieces.

The Celestron 2" 40mm ortho I have is pinpoint sharp across a very nice flat field, very comfortable eye relief, and nice contrast. I particuarly like to view star clusters like M11, and globulars just because of the framed porthole effect.

Clear skies,
Joe

I agree with Ed as these eyepieces aren't really anything
special optically. The couple I've owned have been nice,
decent,useable Chinese plossls.

It's my guess only that because they say Celestron on them,
Ace will stop at nothing to collect them all. Kind of like
waving a red flag in front of a bull.

I was looking for cheap beater set to put togeher for every night use. These EP's seem to fit the bill and are better than the Celestron and E-lux models. Sorry but can't help myself from liking the view through these EP's. So if you must slam me for them, go ahead I don't care! I"m happy with them an thats what counts!!!

I'm not slamming you,I'm really just kidding you. Your
satisfaction is all that counts. They are decent eyepieces.

I'm not slamming you either. I offered you one, but wanted to get out in the open previous comments I've written about this particular eyepiece. There are much better eyepieces. Also, I'm glad someone pointed out, as I had suspected, these are not Vixen eyepieces.

That's ok becuase I found a 20mm TV plossl that will takes it's place. It's a little more money for what I was doing but I have that FL found. I also found the 15mm FL as well. It to is a TV's plossl.

Congratulations on aquiring the TeleVue Plossl, Ace.

Though I am surprized you arent a fan of the Celestron Omni series eyepieces. From what i have see the view is good for the cost(some dealers sell them in the low $30.00's)

Thanks for all the input on this guys.
It's nice to see that I am not the only one that likes these old Silvertop [vixen] plossls.

The term "silvertop" is tossed around a lot to describe (often in error) various Celestron eyepieces with silver colored barrels.

Some are made in China, some are made in Taiwan. The oldest and best ones are made in Japan by Saito for specs laid out by Vixen. These have a "circle V" stamped onto the chrome barrel and are some of the sharpest plossls I have ever looked through. Also, IMO, they have a cool bias. These older Vixen-made Celestron Silvertops (the REAL Silvertops) were imported by Celestron in the 1980's and by Orion in the early 1990's. Now, both Celestron and Orion are largely using Chinese-sourced eyepieces of inferior quality - except the Ultima line (which is made in Japan, but not by Saito) and the Orion Lanthanum line which is still made by Saito for Vixen.

I'll buy that dog if you don't want it. Send me a PM.

I have a long focal-length scope with a 1.25" focuser, and I wear glasses while I observe, so the long eye relief on the 45mm doesn't bother me. I used to own this ep, sold it, bought it again, gave it to my stepson, and now I regret letting it go.

Regards and clear skies,

Very Well Put,Mike. You have hit the nail on the head in stating that we do toss the term silvertop around too loosely.

Thanks for your post, and for bringing out this great point.

My 6 inch f/5 Celestron orange tube reflector purchased in the early 80's came with one eyepice - a 26mm Plossl stamped "Japan" and with a "circle V" on the chrome barrel. It's a darn good eyepiece for my small collection. I wouldn't part with it.
