Hi! John, I don't believe that they were made in any large quantity. I think that it was a limited market, £100 was an awful lot of money in those days, so only the very rich could afford such a luxury! I've added a copy of one of the pages from Pearson's book. The Cary is bottom left - but note the subtle differences between the models Dudley

John - Hi! Thanks for the info. and the welcome! I'm still struggling a bit - but I'll get there. I expect you know John Gregory? He's an old friend of mine. Dudley

I was an acquaintance of the maker of the 8" Sky Research RFT back in the 70s. I am still interested in the 8" f/2.9 and would like to obtain one to use... or have one made. I sold the one that I bought years ago and I regret that I do not still have it now. If anyone knows where I can find one please let me know. Thankyou, BrianL

There are plenty of scopes more rare but the 6" f/15 Cave Astrola refractor seems to be rather rare. I'm sure others exist but in 10 or so years of looking I've only located two of 'em. One is in Athens Greece and the other is in my collection. I'd really like to meet others who own them. Bill

BrianL,
Here's a photo of my 8 inch f/2.9 Sky Research rich field. I bought this new back in the 80's as a larger portable scope and for the wide field views. There's more discussion about these scopes on earlier pages of this thread. A couple of other guys have, or have owned, these, too.
The spider and 8 inch Novak mirror cell aren't part of the Sky Research scope. Since you knew him, what can you tell us about the manufacturer?

I have a 5" f/15 Tinsley Maksutov that's an oldie. Here's a shot showing the freshly machined 1.25" adapter I made for it so I can take bird pictures with my Canon XSi.
Peter Abrahams of the Antique Telescope Society was able to locate the original Tinsley spec sheets and advertising brochures for it and scan and email them to me. Apparently there were only 100 ever made. Anybody else have one?
The telescope optics are great, but I don't care for the prism in the right angle adapter. The scope's a lot sharper without it in the path.
I use it mostly for long-range bird photography. But it's perfect for photographing Walter crater rays and the famous "X". Just the right scale. I need to work on it so I can mount it on the Losmandy dovetail plate on my Paramount.

Could you possibly post a picture of the Cave 6" refractor, or if you have posted it elsewhere, direct me to that thread? Thanks, Rich

One of the rarest telescopes I've seen was a Vega Maksutov. Here's a picture of one at the San Jose club swap meet a couple of years back.

What are the rarest telescope you know of?
Here are the ones I know of:
Astro-Physics Telescopes: AP 235 Fast Max Mak-Newt.
The top view.

Underside.

Me, getting it ready at Chiefland Stary Party 2003.

I loved that telescope! I really hated selling it but I do not regret doing so as it ended up being useful to someone and I was not using it. It is simple, elegant perfection of the Maksutov Newtonian
The scope riding piggy back is a 1 off production prototype of an AP 150mm Mak Cass. It is an awesome little Mak as well. I did not own that one.

The Tinsley's only a 5" aperture and not much for DSO's, but it's well made and pretty much achieves DL at f/15. Here's an example shot from last night taken with the adapter I made and my XSi. Wish you could see the picture at full 12 MPix resolution. It makes an incredible telephoto for long-distance bird photography. Mike

My Steinheil 60mm f/18 refractor dating from the late 1940s is pretty rare. I know of only one other sample and its in Germany.

I guess the rarest scope is the only one that exists - that would be my Murray Scope, built in 1959. Here's the way it looked in about 1962.

Sold: my Fecker Celestar-4 after 40 yrs. of ownership (1970-2010).

Ok, I'll chime in too. This is certainly the rarest scope I've ever seen:
In the latter stages of the 1800's, T. Cooke & Sons of York/England, developed what is considered by many to be the first Apochromatic refractor. Few of these examples (called the Cooke Photovisual) survived intact through the years...many of the iron piers were turned in to be melted down as scrap to help the war efforts, and most of the triplet objectives developed a cloudy/milky haze due to chemical reactions in the glass.
This is the 4"/F18 model, on what the company catalogue amusingly refers to as their 'portable mount!' Some of you will have seen this scope before, as it is the subject of an ongoing clean up.
...it's still ongoing...

Hi everyone,
Quote:
The Celestron pictured here is the very first Celestron, although its maker, Tom Johnson, hadn't coined the name yet.
The just completed scope, an 18-inch pictured here, was not a Schmidt-Cassegrain but a classic Cassegrain, as I recall.
judging by the pic, this scope is a Nasmyth Cassegrain. It also does not have a Schmidt plate. You can see that there is a third mirror mounted directly above the main mirror, and the eyepiece is on the upper fork of the fork mount. (although if the scope is moved in RA, the eyepiece would also move ....)
cheers, Thomas
