I thought I'd share some pics with the new Canon 100-400mm L IS lens. I went to a local independent league (kinda like minor-league) baseball game. You guys can get critical and please let me know what I'm doing wrong... or right.

2nd baseman is a keeper. Excellent lighting, excellent contrast, very nice warm fuzzy feel to it. Hard to critique the lens as it seemed to be a proven quantity from the get go - but now we can see why.

Now this is where the lens shows it's weakness. I really wasn't ready for the play at the plate and kinda rushed the shot but, low light, wide open and action. Since it's not a fast lens, this is the result.

Jim, thanks for posting.
The pitcher shot is difficult to say much about. Putting a slower lens against a shadow like that is going to be challenging, and a limitation of the math more than anything.
The catcher, the flag, and the Moon are all fantastic. I think I like the catcher the best. Overall, the sharpness, action freeze, color, and depth are top notch.
The color in the flag is superb, with a great catch on the shape as the wind hit it just right.
And the Moon...WOW! So that is what a good 400mm lens can do!?!
One thing I'll point out, with little surprise here, is that I can see no CA in any of the shots. I'm assuming most, if not all, of the player shots are at max zoom, and I see no false color whatsoever.
One question about the mechanics of the zoom lens: how does it operate, by turning a ring like a standard external zoom?

Even so with rushing the shot the pic still shows great quality action. I would be happy with that. I think with a bit of practice you'll be posting some awsome shots. The rest of your photos are sharp, looks like a great lens. Enjoy it.

Thanks ron, I agree.
Jason, you're right about the pitcher shot, I think he's underexposed and really didn't think about trying to get it right... this is where my inexperience shows. About the zoom, no, you don't twist like an ordinary zoom lens, this is the best part that i love about the lens. There's a zoom lock (Canon calls it a zoom touch adjustment ring) right behind the focusing ring and you turn it to the left to loosen & right to tighten or lock. All you do is push/pull the 3/4 of the end of the lens and BINGO! you're zooming. I don't know how some people hate this feature, but it is sooo much faster and smoother than the usual twisting motion that is normally found on most zooms. As far as the flag and moon shots, color is good, but re-sizing made all of these pics loose some quailty. The IS really works great and the moon shot was NOT cropped at all, that really blew my mind because it was handheld. shoot, on a tripod, cropped, I'll get a good one one of these days!
smc89, I am happy with the rushed shot because by the time i stopped cheering and realized the throw to home was almost there, I grabbed the camera from around my neck and didn't think it achieved focus and snapped a short burst. That was the only one centered and in somewhat focus.
Just so you guys know, this is my first DSLR and bought it in April of this year. I really enjoy shooting and want to learn as much as I can using the gear I have. So critique the heck out of any shots i post, I won't take it "softly", I'll use it to learn.

Oh yeah, none of these shots were taken in "full auto" mode, mostly in the "P" mode or "manual" mode.

Jim, great series! For your first time out with the lens you definitely got some awesome shots. One question though, what ISO were you shooting at, and what were your general camera settings? I know they most likely varied from shot to shot, but I was curious how you were adjusting things.
I shot a lot of my cousin's softball games last year and after practicing in the field and reading experts advice online, I started trying a few techniques designed for those of us who don't have a lens specifically designed for sports use (IE, not an f/2.8 or faster).
Don't be afraid to bump up the ISO, even to 1600 if necessary. I usually start at 800 and go higher if I need to. The added shutter speed and reduced blurriness from the shot will amost always outweigh the extra noise. Besides, Noise can be worked with in post processing, whereas underexposure and blurriness are harder, if not impossible to deal with after the fact.
Also, if you can move around, try to keep your primary lighting source (usually the sun) behind you and in front of your subjects so at least their faces are lit. You probably noticed this effect when comparing the 2nd baseman shot with the umpire shot. I've gotten use to shooting at f/4-5.6 and sometimes the lighting is just impossible to work with so you have to hope for the best. I was fortunate that my counsin's played most of their games in mid-afternoons, but for those occasional night games I didn't even bother taking the camera because I knew I'd probably get frustrated. Maybe one of these days I'll be able to afford one of those Canon 300mm or 400mm f/2.8L's.
Lastly, while the action shots are obviously the best ones to get when you can get them, I always like getting the reactions of the players and coaches after a particular pitch, hit, error, home run, etc... Sometimes those yield pretty good candids!

On bright, sunny days, try shooting in Tv mode and set your shutter speed as high as your lens will go while still giving you the proper exposure. If the light is good you can be guaranteed of stopping the action which always proves for fun shots.
Also, these may be silly questions, but are you shooting in AF Servo mode and telling the camera to focus on the center AF point only? That'll help too.

Thanks Matt, appreciate the advice too. Well, the settings on the camera cease to exist anymore, I accidentally erased the CF card I do know that most of the shots were 400 ISO and didn't even think to try it at a higher setting... inexperience again. I know about frontlighting the subject but the sun was almost down and I figured I'd try my hand at sidelight shots. That's really challenging and I was using the heck out of the light meter. AS far as the rest of the settings, I think i was shooting F/8 to F/10 with the sun going down and F4.5-5.6 when the lights were on. Here's a shot when the first baseman (for the other team) got caught stealing second and didn't like the call.

Not a silly question at all, that's exactly the mode i shoot in and focus on the center AF point. Thanks for the tip on TV mode, I think that will help me more than anything because i hate shooting during bright, cloudless, sunny days. I never seem to get the right exposure, usually overexposed and I don't like to go to full auto mode (i wanna figure it out myself).

Jim,
If you are new to digital photography and are still figuring things out, I highly recommend going to your local Barnes & Noble and getting a copy of "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson.
Best book I've read on the subject. Peterson is a big "M" mode shooter, which is a great mode to figure out if you actually have the ability to really compose a shot. But, the lessons really help when using Av & Tv mode, which are my two favorite modes to shoot in.
