Old Town Monrovia, CA Sidewalk Astro -- Aug 18 new
      #1781511 - 08/16/07 04:46 PM

Probably just 2-4 telescopes this Saturday in Monrovia, and probably no dobs. I'd figure we'll set up around 7:45pm and take off around 10pm. The Old Town Astronomers website is here: www.otastro.org

The folks from the Sky at Night were in town last November, I think it was. They've got a little bit about what they saw at the end of their July video, linked here.

Ahhh, you beat me to this one.

However, I will add the following from Mojo.

-----------

From the newsletter for Weekend America, on public radio, it looks like they'll be doing a rebroadcast of their story from May 19 that featured Jane, Mojo, and John Dobson. The program airs locally on KPCC 89.3 on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. 'til 3:00 p.m.

But you can hear the story as it aired on May 19 here.

[The Old Town Astronomers are] planning to be in Monrovia at Myrtle and Lime Saturday night. Drop by and say hello! We should have a great crescent moon, and nice Jupiter this weekend. Maybe we'll have some visitors who hear the Weekend America story.

We'll be doing more sidewalk astronomy next weekend with a big gibbous moon. And Jane or I will update you on the total lunar eclipse visible from here in the early morning sky on Tuesday morning, August 28.

Clear Skies,
Mojo

Yes, Scott, I was wondering when you were going to post.

Will you be joining us?

Also, as a heads-up, Jane & Mojo are going to be in Pasadena on the 24th, and Monrovia on the 25th. We other folks will probably join them in Monrovia, but not Pasadena. Blame that one on the lack of parking in Old Town Pasadena.

I have been buried in Cassini extended mission planning and did not have the time to chat with Jane about this.

Yes, I will stop by. I love seeing Jupiter (I should have borrowed Jane and Mojo's Traveler). I also love to pass on some of my knowledge of the planets to the public.

Hopefully, some local CNers will show up.

Old Town Monrovia, CA Sidewalk Astro - Aug 24&25 new [Re: jupiterzkool]

The Old Town Astronomers were out from dusk to ~10 PM last night. Yesterday was a light evening when it came to crowds. Perhaps that was a good thing since only half of the core group were present (three scopes total).

Dave brought out his 17.5 inch Dob. Even though the seeing was poor (with high level clouds popping up now and then), I got some great views of Jupiter. When the air settled, you could also catch the Io transit taking place. To me, the GRS was not too obvious (it would have been on the CML at ~10:30 PM). Zebra was observing the moon most of time, but had to move his scope several times as the buildings kept leaping up and getting in the way.

The memorable quote of the evening was:
J.Q.Public: "Why do you do this?"
Carolyn: "It gives them a reason to be sociable."

The Old Town Sidewalk Astronomers will be in Old Town Pasadena on Aug 24 and in Old Town Monrovia on Aug 25. Please bring your scope a join us.

One of my drives was unoperational last Saturday. First, I forgot to bring one of my power cords. But even if I had remembered, I also discovered that the little tab on the end of the phone cord-like plug for the declination drive was broken off.

The lack of power made that telescope a push-to. I kept that one at low magnification (about 30x) and on the moon, because even at 30x, people still think the moon looks "tight" (At least that's what one youth told his father after looking at the moon!)

That's the telescope that kept having to be repositioned to see over a building and between trees to keep the rapidly-setting moon in view. In that respect, the lack of a power connection made the moves easier (although lugging a six-inch, f/8 refractor, mounted on a tripod, with the counterweight. . . Well, even the ten- and twenty-foot shifts were pretty hard on the back!)

I called Meade today, stayed on hold for a few minutes, then broke down and left a voice mail. That was about an hour ago. Don't know when they'll call me back and what they'll ask for. If I only need to send them the declination motor, I'll still have two mounts on Saturday, one of which will only have RA tracking ability (sufficient for modest magnification). If they need the whole mount sent back, then I'll be down to one mount and one telescope next week. Which should I bring?

Kinda makes me wish I had hung on to my "surplus," unmotorized CG-5.

Bummer about the declination drive. Hopefully Meade will be responsive.

Be glad that you did not have a run in with a bear. I spoke to Jane today about her trip to Yosemite with MoJo and Gary. They definitely have a lively story for all to hear next week.

Heh, heh. Yeah, I'll be looking forward to that bear story.

No call from Meade through noon today. I hope there's a message on the machine when I get home. Otherwise, I'll have to call again. Or maybe fax. . . ?

Unfortunately, tonight is looking very iffy, weather-wise.

Well, looks like things cleared up over Monrovia and most of the group went out. Zebra will have to report on the how the evening went.

I went to a party earlier in the day and the clouds did not clear up where I was, so I had decided to spend more time at the party. I did, however, meet the group chat over martinis, iced tea, etc.

The weather kept us guessing almost right up to "show time." Even as late as 6:30pm, I was thinking it was a 50% proposition that the telescopes would see any light. "Fortunately," I'm down to just one telescope this month. [You'll recall from a previous post above that mount number two is out of commission; it's now sitting in Irvine, getting repaired]. That meant packing the car took just half the time, which is nice when you're thinking you might be wasting your time.

The clouds started thinning as the sun set, however. So score another one for the Clear Sky Clock, which forecasted mostly clear skies, but with poor transparency and good seeing for yesterday evening. The seeing was good (when the clouds weren't masking the view)--multiple cloud belts and a Great Red Spot transit were there to be enjoyed by all.

It was a relatively slow night, slow enough that I managed to steal a few views through some of the other telescopes on the corner. But the lulls lasted no more than a few minutes at a time, except towards the end (more on that later). So I'll guess I had between 60-80 people look through my telescope over the 2 1/2 hours or so I was on the street corner.

By 9 to 9:30pm, the clouds were getting thicker. At times, Jupiter would become invisible to the naked eye, and extremely hard to make out in the telescope. We also lost the moon to clouds on occasion. So, during that last half-hour, there were times when there was nothing to do but wait for the clouds to part. This makes it twice in a row that we've been partially clouded out.

On the other hand, the breaks in the viewing gave me a chance to snack. I already had a bowl of fruit, packed just in case our planned sidewalk astronomy was reduced to a social visit with our friends in Monrovia. In addition, around 9pm, the art gallery across the street was wrapping up their showing. So a guy came over with a tray of little sandwiches [What? No champaign?! ]. And, hey, being part Wookie ("Nice going, Chewy! Always thinking with your stomach"), I wasn't going to let all those little sandwiches go to waste (To waist, but not to waste!). So while we waited for breaks in the clouds, both sidewalk and accidental astronomers were well-fed. Thank you, artists!

That's it for this month.

I'm not sure if we're going to aim for September 15 or the 22nd as the "first quarter moon weekend" next month. I suspect the 22nd is more likely, but that depends on everyone else's schedule. Either way, I'm sure either Scott or I will post once we know for sure.

I know we've got a number of CNers in the area; be nice to see some of you next month!
