is anyone going to Astrofest at Vanna's? Me -- I think I'll pass on Vanna's, and go to Praire Skies.

Which is what most people do nowadays.... Astrofest has gotten smaller every year since PS started...

It would be helpful to all if you would post some more info of what you're talking about -- dates, website links, locations....
Thanks!

Astrofest(www.chicagoastro.org) used to be THE star party here in the mid-west. It was held at Camp Shaw near Kankakee Ill. I started going in the late 80's and watched it grow from a few hundred people to over 900. After some disputes, Prarie Skies( www.praireskies.org) was born. Astrofest moved to Vanna's farm near Kankakee, and Praire Skies stayed at Camp Shaw. It was really disappointing that Astrofest moved to a lesser location. The venders haven't been been showing like they used to, and like Jeff said -- attendence has been going south. It's sad too, because I always looked forward to Astrofest, but now it's Praire Skies for me.

Vanna's farm is a HORRIBLE location personally... I really think THAT was their downfall. They have NO real facilities set up. Just outhouses (Porta-Johns) for the several hundred to share over 3 days...
Prairie skies is a MUCH nicer location...
Vendors have been pulling out of AF and opt'ing for Prairie skies instead...
Give it time, and PS will probably die down. Since Chris at 20/20 started that NEW gathering (Forgot the name off have), it's going to get MORE popular. DARKER skies, Larger location, DEDICATED for observers with permanent pads/power sources, Wireless internet, several Domes and Roll-Offs, as well as cabins for rentals... And it's only a short drive further east..

I never went to AstroFest, but as Jeff said, Chris certainly did an absolutely terrific job in organizing and executing EPOCH 2007. Nothing - and I mean NOTHING - was overlooked, an amazing feat for a brand-new star party. And the skies were great as well.
Assuming it'll also mesh with NSP next year, it's on my "don't-miss" list (I hit about 7-9 star parties a year...)
