astrophotography must be the hardest picture takin new
      #1727460 - 07/19/07 08:28 PM

Last night I tried to photograph the moon. I used a Celestron c6n reflector on a cg5 mount. I used a 8mm xcel lens. Orion steady mount. With a Minolta SRT 101 camera, with the normal lens. And, 400 speed slide film. Got the moon in the eyepiece, mounted the camera to the eyepiece. Raised the camera's mirror Then, waited a few seconds for the telescope to quit vibrating, and took the pictures. Today, when I got the film back, there was no moon! Also what is a good starting exposure of Jupiter?

Welcome to the crazy obsessive hobby, and to Cloudy Nights. I can't help you with Jupiter exposures, especially with afocal. Good luck, and have fun.

Which is easier. To photograph a planet with film, or the brighter deep sky objects? A planet, the exposures are shorter, but the magnifications are a great deal stronger. But, a deep sky with prime focus, it is the reverse. What would be a good magnification to photograph Jupiter. To at least show some surface detail. 96X the image is still very small.

Funny thing is that my moon shots were way underexposed. But, my photos of Jupiter were overexposed.
