Re: It is with a heavy heart I post about Tom Back new [Re: NGC007]

I'm in shock. I had e-mailed Thomas a few times about his CNC telescopes and he was always corteous and very informative. I had been drooling over his 80 mm CNC OTA for a few months and everything i've read about his telescopes were wonderful reviews. His passing away is a huge loss for the community and he will be missed. RIP.

Eric-

I spoke to Thomas innumerable times over the telephone, both before and after buying two of his telescopes. I don't know why he went to such great pains to provide me with what he called his *finest telescope*, the mighty TMB 203 f/7. I think that he recognised a kindrid spirit who was determined to get the ultimate performance from one of his scopes. I recall his absolute delight at my observing report of Palomar 12 with the TMB 203! He always struck me as a very nice individual, and a truly ethical vendor. I shall miss him.

Eric
You are totally right about Thomas. I exchanged a few emails with him and his honesty was refreshing. I asked him on two different occasions how his new 'Brick' design would stand up against two highly prized competitors' scopes. He responded that these competitors' scopes would have an edge, whereas the Brick design offered a better value for your money.
I don't know of any scope maker/designer who would volunteer such candor.
No snow job from this man. No arrogance. No pomposity. And from his emails it was plain to see ...that he was just an all-around swell guy.
He was a class act...and from my perspective, in a class by himself.
Hope other designers learn this lesson from him.
This wonderful hobby would be much better off.

I have been away for a while and just returned to find out about Mr Backs death. A great loss to the Astronomic community. My heart goes out to his family.
