Thanks everyone!

Lawrie - Each exposure is only 60 seconds. I can go up to about 2 minutes without guiding with this mount at this focal length and get decent results as long as my alignment is good(but am usually limited to under 90 seconds due to local LP).

Thanks, Dave. I've been working on my processing to coax out as much HA color as possible without affecting the star colors.

Oh, I see then Deepsky Stacker takes care of the registering the images together to remove any accumulated field rotation.
I am asking because I just came over to the Dark Side. ( I just purchased a DSLR- 350D I think the same as your camera) and any hints or tips would be appreciated.

Lawrie - yes, DeepSkyStacker does a fantastic job combining frames. I can't recommend that freeware enough.

Ned - I was going to go for the 60-Minute IPA but I figured the 90 would reveal more HA.

What kind of processing does pixinsight have that photoshop doesnt have? I want to try pixinsight, but it looks VERY complicated! What kinds of tools do you guys mostly use with pixinsight?

Yeah, when I first installed PixInsight I didn't know where to begin. There is so much, and still I have only scraped the surface and have so much to learn. What I am using PI for most is the initial stretch using the histogram transform and curves tools which I think are a bit more powerful than Photoshop's. I also use the dynamic background extraction tool/pixel math which works very well at taming gradients. I also like the noise reduction. The HDR wavelet transform is great for pulling detail out of galaxies though it requires some experimentation. Being a long-time Photoshop user, I still prefer it for working with layer masks and final curves/color tweaks.

VERY cool! Next time I have an image worthy of alot of post-processing, I will experiment! (hopefully tonight) I downloaded the free pixinsight LE, but is that good enough? Should I get the paid version? I am a LONG time photoshop user myself, I use it pretty much every day for daylight images at work, BUT astrophotography makes photoshop a completely different program! Whatever you are doing, you are doing it right!!

Thanks, Jon.

I have never tried the LE version, but it may be a good way to get your feet wet. The 'paid' full version is still free AFAIK, and is updated about every 3 weeks. Yes, while PI can IMO do some things better than PS, I am very comfortable using PS(also use it in day job) and am not likely to ever exclude using it. I tend to think in layers.
