After three months of the summer sky sludge I managed a total of two nights out. Seeing was terrible and there was a breeze to contend with but at least I was out.
Tak Sky 90 II • G-11 • Canon 20D(unmodified) @ 800 ISO • Unguided, no flats, no darks • 34 x 180 sec. • Noel's Astro Tools
Thanks for looking. Sure am ready for cold, clear nights.

Nice image, how lomg have you been imaging?
Hope I can ask a newbie question, what's a modified DSLR. I am wanting to start imaging soon with my 350D I have just started to read threads on this forum. A lot have mentioned modified or unmodified.

I'm impressed. I've shot NGC 7000 several times with my unmodded 5D with longer exposures but didn't pick up that much nebulosity. Congrats on a beautiful image!

NH,
You must have some SERIOUSLY dark skies at your place. My modded 20D with longer subs didn't even come close to what you've done with that camera of yours. Nice Job!

Thanks very much everyone.
Mark, I've ben shooting deep sky for about 3 1/2 years. You can read more about camera modification for astro here: http://www.sciencecenter.net/hutech/canon/index.htm I haven't modified any of my cameras(300D, 20D and 5D) because I use them for wildlife/nature photography as well. The 300D gathers dust, not light these days. :-)
Nate, I gave up using my 5D this summer due to more noise than I would have expected during long exposures. It's a thing of beauty for wildlife shooting but I didn't like the color/backgound noise in 3 minute plus exposures at night. I only evaluated RAW files on screen (Canon Pictureviewer Software) and never did try stacking and processing so maybe the noise level is simply more intense due to the high resolution of the 5D. May have to start shooting dark frames. I intend to give it a more serious try when it gets cold, sure would like to take advantage of those 12 megapx.
Strgazr27, skies are certainly not as dark in the summer months due to moisture/haze that comes standard with every summer here. We have a large glow from the city to our north and any haze only scatters that light. Zenith and the east are very nice most nights. I was surprised at the results, mainly because of the poor seeing and transparency. The weather ahead looks to be unfavorable for me adding subs to this batch. If not in the next couple weeks, then next year I'll try again.
Thanks again all!

Nice shot. That's more nebulosity than some shots I've seen taken with expensive SBIG cameras.
