It is the original orion cell made from particle board, the mirror is glued to it with 3 globs of silicone, so I don't want to get the wood wet. I was thinking I could wrap plastic sheeting around the whole assembly and tape it around the mirror edge with waterproof tape.

I pulled the mirror cell for some pictures of the mirror & assembly

I was reading a review on excelsis.com from a new Discovery dob owner who "cleaned" his primary with a broomstick, paper towels and Windex!

I've seen professional opticians clean multi-million dollar optics with Windex. Paper towels are another matter.

Ok, I'm going to leave this one to others that have the same cell. I don't think you want to get that chipboard wet.

I'm going to pick up guitar strings this week to cut the silicone. I may document the cleaning process for future posting.

Try using dental floss first.

Just curious - all the references I've seen to dish soap have mentioned Dawn. Is there something about it that is different than other dish soaps?

Dawn blue dishwashing soap is simply good dishwashing soap with no additives. Nothing to make your hands soft, to give a nice scent, etc... For that reason, there is nothing extra to stay on your mirror after you rinse it. It rinses very clean. It's that simple.
