I do not want to get caught with too much to do at one time so I have started clearing small areas for new Dahlia gardens.

Dahlias are different from other large plants ( 3ft. to 6ft. tall). In most northern areas the tubers have to be dug up and stored for the winter. You can use a storage medium such as slightly dampend peat moss, sand, or pet bedding material. I will be using sawdust for mine. Tubers should be stored in crates or cardboard boxes. Put 10 to 12 sheets of newspaper in first for lining the bottom of container. Then add some of your storage midium. Next layer tubers and medium until container is full. Never store in plastic containers. Store in a cool ,dry area(temp. of 40to50 degrees). Too warm they will wrinle/shrivel and to cold they will freeze/rot. Make sure to check them each mounth of storage through out winter. One more thing make sure you label the tubers with verity name.

Normally Mom starts her dahlias from seed and sells them as annuals. Because of that I normally toss the tubers. But in another month or so, I think I'll start some varieties from seed and then start saving the tubers as you suggested.
Or I might just buy some tubers from some of my catalogs. I've got some good areas in the house that would be perfect for storing them like you suggest. I would have thought it'd be better to store without the peat like you would corms, bulbs and rhizomes to prevent rotting or fungus.
If you dampen the peat at the beginning, am I understanding you right that after that, you leave it to dry for the rest of the dormant period?
You've really sparked my interest in adding a dahlia collection in my gardens instead of just a few in pots like I normally do. I'm getting excited about it.
