Hello,
here is my latest observation of M31. I'll post a mini tutorial in the october target post later. This night there was a lot of moisture in the air. It limited my nelm to 4.8. The skyglow was disturbing my observation at x16 a lot. So I decided to draw at x20. I also tried to enhance the contrast with the Baader Contrast Booster. M32 appeared starlike while M110 was a dificult target to see. The observation took me about an hour. I first concentrated on observing bright areas in the galaxy. Then I reversed my approach and looked for dark features. It resulted in the sketch below. If the sky had been darker, I might have been able to capture the fainter extends of the galaxy.
Date : October 7, 2007 Time : 21.00UT Scope : Skywatcher 102/500 Meade SP 26mm Power : x20 FOV: 150' Filter : Baader Contrast Booster Seeing : 3.5/5 Transp. : 3/5 Nelm : 4.8 Sketch Orientation : N up, W right. Digital sketch made with PhotoPaint, based on a raw pencil sketch.

Rony, Great job on this sketch. I had to turn the lights out and dark adapt for a while to see M 110. But after a while I got it. Fantastic, I have never done this before. With a 4.8 sky I would have done the same at the eyepiece. Is this cool or what?

Rony,
One of the finest renderings of the famous Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and companions (M32/M110). You have captured the star-like nucleus and dust lanes perfectly. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

I was able to finally make an observation tonight (10/10/07 at 02:30 U.T.) of the famous Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and companions (M32/M110) using my 9-inch (23-cm) F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain reflector at 78x. The seeing conditions were average (5/10) and transparency 4/6. The nucleus of the galaxy appeared star-like and the central portion was prominent as well. Dust lanes were visible adjacent to the central region of the galaxy. M32 appeared towards the southeast as a diffuse elliptical glow. M110 was visible towards the west as a diffuse object with a bright core. I hope that you all like it. I look forward to everyone else's observation of this galaxy.
A graphite observation (4H to HB) and then scanned and inverted in Photoshop.

Carlos, nice, and a wonderful example of how variables (personal, equipment, sky, etc) all conspire to bring different artistic representations of the same objects. An interesting study to make some day...

Carlos,
Excellent sketch. You know, it is much easier to let you and Rony set up and post these beautiful sketches. That way I can just observe here through your scopes. Beautiful.

Frank, Mark, and Tom
Thank you for your compliments on my M31 observation. I was impressed by the amount of detail visible. In reviewing the image that I posted I noted that my scanner had produced granular detail. I rescanned the image and it now appears as I observed it. The best of luck in your own observations of M31.

Thank you all for the kind comments.
Carlos, your sketch is absolutely beautyful!!!
Frank, I produced the sketch at night with little use of light around my laptop. That will be the reason why M110 is dificult to see on the monitor in a bright room.
