Garden Pond advice
      #1908767 - 10/14/07 07:45 AM

Hi there, I would like to know if its possible to have a garden pond without any filtering system. Is there any plants etc that would help keep the water fairly clean and free from algae. Any comments or advice would be welcomed.
cheers.
Andy.

Having built 4 ponds in the past 10 years, I tend to rely on a filtering system with ultraviolet light for the main filtering tasks. Any pond is going to "scum" up with algae especially in the summer. You can use plants like Lotus, Lilies, Hyacinth or any other tube type water plant. These plants will help to cut down on the formation of algae but not entirely.

Another way to help curb algae formation is to locate the pond under a tree or a man made cover. My backyard pond which is a store bought 100 gallon, is located under my patio cover and has less algae than my front pond which is in the open Sun.

Size has a lot to do with algae formation. Larger ponds tend to tolerate the algae better as it is a larger ecosystem platform.

Good place to look for filtering systems:

I built the pond in this photo (300gal.) a few months ago for a friend. It has a medium filter box with ultraviolet light and a 600 gal/hr. water pump. I just looked at it last week and it was crystal clear! Hint: always get a filter water pump rated with a flow rate 2x greater than the size of the pond. Ex: 300 gal pond=6oo gal/hr. pump
