If you head south far enough, you'll hit the bay area, where I currently am, seeing my boss insisted I stay through monday...sorry to hear the weather didn't cooperate...never say die, though! We WILL get together eventually!!!
Larry, I hope to see you later this week.

Well, I'm back home. What an unpleasant experience. I found the White River BSA parking lot with little difficulty and fortunately for me there was one die-hard RCA member there. That was at 8:40. We waited until 9:20 by which time it had started to rain and no one else had made an appearance. My profound sympathies to anyone who tried to find the location in the pitch black and rain. I hope everybody is alright. That drive on the mountain was no picnic. If anyone traveled from afar to get here and by some chance you have access send me a PM and we can try to get together for breakfast. I hate to think anyone made that trip for nothing. Exhausted, Julia

So I wasn't the only blind duck out there!
I arrived about 8:00, glassed the mountain for a while, went for a stroll, ate dinner. I *think* I was in the lot identified in the aerial photo. It was right next to the river, had His and Hers (locked) outhouses; and at the top of the lot there was a strange contraption, kind of like a fifteen foot ladder with 5 or 6 widely spaced rungs, that had no apparent purpose. Does that sound like the right place, Robert? The lot is a nice place for viewing.
I left a bit after 9:00, when the clouds started spitting.
Arrived back in Tacoma about 12:30, delighted to find my wife still up, with a bowl of homemade ice cream in her lap. She just doesn't appreciate the subtle pleasures of six hours of driving for a chilly picnic but I'm still working on her.

I'm so glad you made it home safe Mike! I have been worrying about you and Pegster and Rhosheen. I saw two cars start to turn in to the lot I was in but they, no doubt reading the directions correctly, quickly moved on. That was at about 9:10 or 9:15. I'm really sorry I missed you all! Julia

Yes, home safe indeed. But I'm really sorry I missed meeting you fine people, and *really* sorry I missed the breakfast invitation!
One "home safe" anecdote, although this happened on the trip south, not on the return trip. There was a guy who was seriously drunk driving a black Kia van on I-5 between Tacoma & Olympia. He would stray half a car width across lane lines, make a jerky correction, then do the same on the other side. He'd drop back behind the car in front of him, then punch it and tail gate for a bit, then drop back. While I'm not usually a finger-pointer, after a while I phoned in a report. The dispatcher asked me for the location, then a description of the car. When I gave him the description he said, "Oh, that one's already been reported." I watched in my mirrors for a while, but never saw lights. Worst one I've seen in years.

While clear sky clocks and Natl. Weather Svc. have their places, to avoid wasted trips I suggest an additional check on weather conditions prior to future outings.

Perfect mike! Thats it. However, the bathrooms were locked?!?! Thats news to me. There usually open..hmm. I think that ladder is for snow measurement.. i think. All the other snow parks have that, so who knows.

Yep, that was me and Phil (aka Rhosheen) followed by Kerry (aka SKY CAPTAIN) and his wife Cindy. Phil & I stayed till about 10:00 and never saw a star. We did see Jupiter peek thru a sucker hole on the way back down.
I went and visited my brother, his wife and my niece and nephew in Portland this morning, so the trip wasn't a total loss. Table Mountain Star Party is Aug. 4-6. Registration is closed (full up). Labor Day weekend is OSP. Maybe a bunch of us can get together there.
Clear skies, all!

After such a buildup I hate to think that that's *it* for the summer. Let me suggest an alternative get-together.
Perseids are due to peak Aug. 11 / 12, if memory serves, with little or no moon. I expect that I'll spend the night of Friday the 12th in the parking lot at Sunrise Point on Mt. Rainier (unless memory, in fact, is playing tricks on me again.) Can I cajole any of you Oregonian types to make the trip up? Tom, Kerry, it would mean a trip to Pierce County, but I promise to keep it quiet if you're worried about your reputations.
It is a most excellent site in several ways. It costs $10 to enter Mt. Rainier Natl. Park, but I always simply go in after they stop taking $$ for the day (6:30 or 7:00).

Sounds good mike! We will be there. To bad we just missed, we were eating dinner at the Mount Hood Inn, some pub\diner, great food. That was about 8:00pm then Tom and Phil met us there. We should have traded phone numbers. On the bright side, we sure like the location and look forward to going back when it is clear out. We went down to Hood River and across to the Washington side then to the Skamania resort for a great nights sleep.
rosecityred, Julia we are sorry we missed you, can't believe it was that close. Cindy was looking forward to meeting you.
550 mile round trip for us and no regrets. Adventure is our middle name!

Okay then, the gauntlet has drawn the line in the sand, the wine has been tossed, the goat has been toasted, the corn has been eared . . . are you Oregahoonians all talk, or are you going to do it? Julia, I promise I can give you perfect directions. Robert, I can give your boss an offer that can't be confused. Tom L, I promise the Endurance can pull through. John, the Weed won't slip.

OK! All present and accounted for. I will stop fretting now. I guess it just wasn't meant to happen this time. But I still feel very foolish. Kerry, I'm glad you had a nice trip and please give my regards to Cindy. I'm looking forward to meeting up whole bunch of you sometime soon! ~ Julia
