There is an orchid greenhouse in New Gloucester, Maine that was written up in the Portland magazine a few years ago. My plan is to check it out while I'm in Maine between Christmas and new year. I'm hoping that I'll find some really unusual orchids to replace the phals that I tossed.
A few years ago, I was looking for someone's golf ball in the trees on a course here in Portland and found some Lady Slippers growing right there. I remember seeing lots of them growing in the woods behind our house in Connecticut.

I can't get Paphiopedalums to grow for me (Ladys Slippers). They die very very slowly no matter what I do.
That Santa Barbara Orchid Estate is just around the corner from us. While you're in Maine drop by for a quick visit!

Thanks for the links. I just have two orchids - both different types - but don't ask me what varieties they are, I don't have a clue.

Thanks. Unfortunately, neither is currently in bloom and my camera is at work. I received both from my father who is the head grower at a large wholesale greenhouse in the Toledo, Ohio area. I do have digital pics of both in bloom but it's a matter of finding them. I've had to replace my laptop's harddrive since them and I'm nearly certain that I burned them onto a CD.
One is a typical looking orchid - low and wide dark-green leaves coming from a single stem (and lots of roots). Its flowers are white and red lipped with a center blush. If I recall correctly, I think he said it was a P. Mount Lip "Chou" or something like that...I've had it since 2004.
The older, other orchid is much different. It looks to have "bulbs" - eight in total. Each of five "bulbs" have four long and thin light green leaves. The flowers are smaller than the other orchid and are tanish in color with some reddish speckling and blushing in the center.
Three of the "bulbs" no longer have leaves. Are they, for lack of a better term, "inactive" or just dead (they still are green at the bottom)? And if they are dead, as they haven't produced leaves in about a year, can they be safely removed or just let them be as they are definitely part of the attached series of "bulbs"?

I have no idea what the first plant is.
On the second plant: The description sounds like a Cymbidium. The dead bulbs can be removed if they are no longer producing leaves. Use a sharp blade or cutter doused with alcohol or Physan.

Thanks a bunch...
Cymbidium sounds very familiar.
As soon as I find those pics, I'll post them.

Those are very nice! I see a Cymbidium, Phalaenopsis, and I think an Oncidium. Some others too.
They're especially nice when they actually bloom.

She brings home all sorts (with permission of course), Phals, Phrags, some gorgeous Paphs. Last time it was a little Encyclia cochleata (which has never flowered since). Can't wait to see what next year brings after 2 Feb - 2 Mar 2008 http://www.kew.org/plants/orchids/index.html

My encyclias have bloomed every year except this one. I have no clue why they skipped this year, maybe just having a holiday.

We went to Woodsprite orchids in New Gloucester Maine last week. I got a Vanda hybrid and an oncidium -- not the type of orchids I typically see at Home Depot.

Beautiful flower! I have a blue vanda with buds on it, they should open any day now, after two years of waiting.

Thanks. I'd love to be able to say that I got it to that stage but all I did was browse until I found it. The so-called "vanda" I got is Ascocdenda Princess Mikasa. It is supposedly bred for cooler temps, which is good since my house stays pretty cold. It has buds on it and should bloom soon. If it does, I'll post photos. It will have blue flowers with white streaks.

I waited 2 years for this Blue Vanda to bloom, trying every type of food/sun/watering combination. Finally I just quit feeding it altogether, gave it a lot of sun, and watered it every once in a while. This is a bare root plant, no soil or bark medium, the roots hang in air.
Not only did I photograph the bloom, I photographed a 50 hour time lapse video, 621 frames taken 5 minutes apart to yield a 31 second video.
Here's the link to the MP4 version (3 megs):
http://cheapskate-astro.net/blue-vanda-blooming.mp4
This is the MOV version (75 megs):
http://cheapskate-astro.net/blue-vanda-blooming.mov
I don't know why the MOV is so big, it displays the same size as the MP4.

That is absolutely GORGEOUS, Eric!! Kudos for coaxing it to bloom!!
Is that water on the petals or is the flower slightly iridescent?

It's iridescent. One of the prettiest of 150 orchids I swoon over.
I didn't coax it to bloom, coaxing only made it shy. Neglect made it bloom.
The time-lapse took about 5 hours to process. I had to reduce the frame size to 33%, any larger and I would run out of ram.

This is great I knew CL was going to be my favorite site and now I find out along with all of the great discussions on astronamy, I now find a section on plants. I have a greenhouse full of orchids. I will have to stay posted in this forum.
