Hi,
I got to see Holmes this morning and made a sketched observation.
South is up. I guess east is left in a reflector.
Stats are:
9.75" GSO Reflector
159x with 8mm BO/TMB Planetary eyepiece.
October 29, 2007 0505 UT Seeing 7P
Comet showed an annular appearance, with one hard edged side with slightly brighter edge. Opposite with softer and showed a smoky appearance. Inner coma was brighter and nearly circular with a slightly fanned shape. At about 6 o'clock was a very bright star-like but fuzzy nucleus at inner coma's edge.
Sketch was done with 2H and 4H pencils on smooth Bristol Board and appears nearly actual size on my monitor.
Best,

Sol,
A fantastic observation/rendering of a very interesting comet. The jets and spherical coma are clearly depicted in your observation. I hope to see this comet soon myself.

Sol,
Excellent pencil sketch of comet Holmes. Very dramatic and beautiful as the comet appears in the eyepiece.

Sol,
Beautiful drawing. I saw much the same view two hours earlier using the 8mm BO/TMB Planetary EP I got last summer--I love that thing.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words.
It really is an incredible sight. Naked eye, its nearly stellar even with the Moon close by. I also live in a very light polluted area ~8 mile from the George Washington Bridge, New York City.
I also tried a light blue filter and then a very broad band nebula filter just out of curiousity. It didn't improve the view, but merely changed it. Anyway, I found it interesting.
Sketch was done without filters. Coma itself was a very pale yellow in IL

Beautifully done, Sol. I finally was able to view it last night both naked eye and with the binoculars. I'm hoping tonight I won't be too tired to sketch it. I have to wait until after midnight for it reach above the trees here.
It was really cool seeing open cluster Melotte 20 in the FOV with the comet with the binoculars.

great sketch, i saw the comet on thursday night, it was less than half of the size that it is today great sketch, we are unbelievably lucky to catch such a unforessen comet in our northern skies, almost makes up for McNaught heading south just when it got interesting.

I didn't notice the cone being fuzzy on one side. Thanks for a great rendition and something more to look for.
